Alarm Not Going Off
Google Nest Smart Speaker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Google Nest alarms fail when the speaker volume is muted, Do Not Disturb is on, or the alarm was set on the wrong device. Check the volume level and Do Not Disturb setting in the Google Home app.
Affected Models
- Google Nest Mini
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Hub
- Google Nest Hub Max
- Google Home
Common Causes
- Speaker volume muted or set very low — alarm sounds at the current volume level
- Do Not Disturb mode active on the device
- Alarm set on a different Nest device in the household
- Alarm set using AM when PM was intended (or vice versa)
- Internet connection issue preventing Google's alarm clock service from triggering
- Alarm accidentally deleted or modified in the Google Home app
How to Fix It
-
Check the speaker volume — say 'Hey Google, volume 8' before bedtime.
Google Nest alarms ring at whatever the current volume level is. If the speaker was muted for a podcast and never unmuted, the alarm will play silently.
-
Turn off Do Not Disturb on the device.
Open the Google Home app, tap your Nest device, and check that Do Not Disturb is not active. Alternatively say 'Hey Google, turn off Do Not Disturb.'
-
Confirm which device the alarm is set on.
In the Google Home app, tap the device you expect the alarm to ring on, then tap the clock icon to see its alarms. Alarms set on the 'wrong' Nest device in a multi-speaker home are a very common cause of missed alarms.
-
Verify the AM/PM setting when setting the alarm.
When setting an alarm by voice, say 'Hey Google, set an alarm for 7 AM tomorrow' and listen to Google's confirmation. Always confirm the time it reads back to you.
-
Restart the Nest device.
Unplug the power cable, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Allow 60 seconds for the device to reconnect. Then re-set your alarm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Google Nest alarms ring if the internet is down?
No. Google Nest speakers require an internet connection to function, including alarms. If your Wi-Fi or internet drops overnight, the alarm may not ring.
Can I set a Google Nest alarm to ring on all my speakers at once?
Yes. Say 'Hey Google, set an alarm for 7 AM on all devices' or create a routine in the Google Home app that targets a speaker group.
