Blinking White Light
Google Nest Smart Speaker
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A blinking white light on a Google Nest speaker means the device is processing a request, downloading a firmware update, or in factory reset mode. A slow white pulse means the device is in standby with night mode on.
Affected Models
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
- Google Home
- Google Home Mini
Common Causes
- Device is processing a Hey Google command
- Firmware update downloading or installing
- Device is in factory reset mode after holding the reset button
- Night mode active — status light dimmed to a slow pulse
- Device starting up after being plugged in
How to Fix It
-
Wait 60 seconds — a brief blinking white light during startup or after commands is completely normal.
After being plugged in, the Nest shows a white blinking light while connecting to Wi-Fi and Google services. This is expected and resolves within a minute.
-
If the white light blinks continuously for more than 5 minutes, restart the device.
A firmware update that stalls can cause a continuous white blink. Unplugging and replugging retries the update process.
-
In the Google Home app, check the device status under your device settings.
The Google Home app shows the exact device state — updating, offline, or error. This helps distinguish a normal update blink from a fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do the different light colours mean on Google Nest?
White = processing a command, updating, or standby pulse. Orange = microphone muted. Multiple spinning colours = setting up or searching for Wi-Fi. Pulsing orange = error or cannot connect to Google services.
My Google Nest blinks white every few seconds all day — is that normal?
A very slow white pulse every few seconds is Night Mode reducing the status light brightness. You can disable Night Mode in the Google Home app if you prefer no light at all.
