Bluetooth Not Pairing
Google Nest Smart Speaker
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Google Nest Bluetooth pairing issues are usually caused by a stale pairing entry or the phone not being in pairing mode. Forget the device in the Google Home app and pair it again fresh.
Affected Models
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
- Google Home
- Google Home Max
Common Causes
- Phone or device Bluetooth not in pairing mode
- Too many saved Bluetooth devices on the Nest
- Stale or corrupted pairing entry from a previous connection
- Phone and Nest too far apart during pairing
- Nest Bluetooth turned off in the Google Home app settings
How to Fix It
-
In the Google Home app, go to your Nest device > Settings > Paired Bluetooth devices and remove the problematic device.
A stale pairing entry prevents successful reconnection. Removing it and pairing fresh resolves most Bluetooth issues.
-
Put your phone or device in Bluetooth pairing mode and hold it within 30 cm of the Nest.
During initial pairing, keep both devices close together. Proximity matters during the pairing handshake.
-
Say 'Hey Google, Bluetooth pairing' to put the Nest in pairing mode.
This command enables Bluetooth discovery on the Nest. Your phone should then show it in the list of available Bluetooth devices.
-
Restart both the Nest and toggle Bluetooth off and on on your phone.
Fresh Bluetooth stacks on both devices improve pairing success. Unplug the Nest for 30 seconds, then toggle phone Bluetooth before retrying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Google Nest show as paired but will not connect?
A paired but non-connecting device usually has a stale entry. Remove it from Paired Bluetooth devices in the Google Home app, restart the Nest, and pair again from scratch.
Does Google Nest support Bluetooth or only Wi-Fi?
Google Nest Audio and Nest Mini (2nd gen) support Bluetooth in addition to Wi-Fi. The original Google Home (2016) does not support Bluetooth audio output — it is Wi-Fi cast only.
