Calls Not Working / Can't Make Calls
Google Nest Nest Smart Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Google Nest calling not working is most often caused by Personal Results being disabled — this setting must be enabled for the speaker to make calls on your behalf. In the Google Home app, go to the speaker's settings and enable Personal Results. Also confirm the Google account linked to the speaker has Google Contacts set up.
Affected Models
- Google Nest Mini
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Home
- Google Home Mini
- Google Nest Hub Max (video calls)
Common Causes
- Personal Results disabled in Google Home app — calling requires this setting
- Google account not linked to the speaker in the Google Home app
- Google Duo (now Google Meet) not configured on the linked Google account
- Contacts not synced to the Google account — speaker cannot look up contact names
- Calling feature not available in your country or region
How to Fix It
-
Enable Personal Results for the speaker.
Open the Google Home app and tap on the speaker. Go to Settings > Recognition and Sharing > Personal Results. Toggle it on. Personal Results allows the speaker to access your Google contacts, calendar, and call history — without it, calling is blocked.
-
Verify the Google account is linked.
In the Google Home app, go to Settings > Linked Accounts. Confirm your Google account is listed. If not, tap Add Account and sign in. Calling uses the linked Google account's contact list and Google Meet integration.
-
Set up Google Meet on the linked account.
Google Nest calling uses Google Meet (previously Duo). Sign in to meet.google.com on a browser to confirm your account is active. If prompted to set up Meet, complete the setup. The speaker cannot place calls if Meet has not been activated on the account.
-
Sync Google Contacts.
Go to contacts.google.com on a PC and confirm the contacts you want to call are listed. Contacts not in Google Contacts cannot be dialled by name via voice command. Import contacts from your phone if they are not yet in Google Contacts.
-
Check if calling is available in your country.
Google Nest calling (outbound calls to phone numbers) is only available in certain countries including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Google Meet video calls are available more broadly. Check the Google Nest Help Centre for the current list of supported countries for voice calling.
When to Call a Professional
Calling on Google Nest is a software and account feature — no hardware service is needed.
