Casting Not Working

Google Nest Smart Speaker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Nest not appearing as a cast target usually means the phone and speaker are on different Wi-Fi networks, the Google Home app needs an update, or the speaker needs a restart. For casting to work, the phone and Nest speaker must be on the same Wi-Fi network — 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands on the same router count as the same network.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Home
  • Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen)
  • Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen)
  • Google Nest Hub Max

Common Causes

  • Phone and speaker on different Wi-Fi networks — including guest network vs. main network
  • Google Home app needs an update
  • Speaker needs a restart — cast discovery stops working over time without a reboot
  • Phone's Wi-Fi is off and using mobile data — cast requires Wi-Fi on both devices
  • Speaker Wi-Fi disconnected — check for a yellow or red light ring

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the phone is on the same Wi-Fi as the speaker.

On the phone, check that Wi-Fi is on and connected to your home network. Open the Google Home app — if the speaker is visible and shows 'Connected', both devices are on the same network. If it shows 'Offline' or cannot be found, check the phone's network.

  2. Restart the Nest speaker.

Unplug the speaker from power, wait 10 seconds, plug back in. After 1–2 minutes, the speaker rejoins the network and cast discovery refreshes. Most casting 'not available' errors are fixed by a simple power cycle.

  3. Update the Google Home app.

Open the App Store or Google Play Store and check for a Google Home app update. After major Android or iOS updates, the Google Home app may need an update to reconnect properly to Nest devices.

  4. Check that the phone is not on mobile data.

If Wi-Fi is off on the phone, casting will not work — both the phone and the speaker need to be on the same local network. Pull down the notification shade and confirm Wi-Fi is on and shows your home network name.

  5. Check the speaker light for Wi-Fi connection status.

A yellow pulsing light on the Nest Audio or Nest Mini means the speaker has lost its Wi-Fi connection. Go to the Google Home app and reconnect the speaker to your Wi-Fi network in the device settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does casting drop out after a few minutes on my Google Nest speaker?

Casting dropouts are usually caused by Wi-Fi signal drops between the phone and the speaker. Try moving the phone closer to the router during playback, or move the Nest speaker to a location with a stronger Wi-Fi signal.

Can I cast Spotify, YouTube Music, or Apple Music to Google Nest?

Yes. Spotify Connect, YouTube Music, and most major music services support casting to Google Nest speakers directly from their apps. Tap the cast icon in the app and select your Nest speaker. Apple Music requires the Google Home app workaround or AirPlay on compatible Nest Hub models.
