Do Not Disturb Not Working

Google Nest Smart Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Nest Do Not Disturb not working usually means the DND schedule was set for the wrong time zone, the feature was enabled in the Google Home app but not synced to the device, or certain alert types (alarms, timers) bypass DND by design. Check the DND schedule in Google Home app → device → Digital Wellbeing.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Mini
  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Nest Hub
  • Google Nest Hub Max
  • All Google Nest smart speaker models

Common Causes

  • DND schedule set for a different time zone than the device's current location
  • Alarms and timers bypass DND on some Nest firmware versions — this is by design
  • DND enabled but Nest device out of sync — schedule did not push to the device
  • Google Home app DND toggle not saved due to a network error during setup
  • Proactive updates (weather, news) not suppressed — some notification types are not covered by DND

How to Fix It

  1. Check the DND schedule in Google Home app.

Open the Google Home app → select your Nest device → Settings → Digital Wellbeing → Downtime. Verify the scheduled times are correct for your time zone. If the schedule shows the right hours but DND is not activating, delete the schedule and recreate it — a sync error sometimes prevents the schedule from pushing to the device.

  2. Manually activate DND to test it.

Say 'Hey Google, turn on Do Not Disturb' or use the Google Home app toggle to enable DND immediately (not scheduled). Check whether the Nest speaker responds to a command like 'Hey Google, play music' — it should play normally since DND only silences proactive announcements, not responses to commands. Then check if a broadcast or reminder from another device is silenced — it should be.

  3. Understand what DND does and does not silence.

Google Nest Do Not Disturb silences proactive announcements, broadcasts, and notification chimes. By design, DND does NOT silence alarms and timers on most Nest models — they fire regardless of DND to ensure you wake up or are alerted. If alarms and timers are the issue, you need to manually delete them rather than relying on DND.

  4. Update the Google Home app and Nest firmware.

Open the App Store or Google Play Store and update the Google Home app. Also check for Nest device firmware updates: Google Home app → your device → Settings → About → Firmware version. Firmware updates fix DND sync bugs that cause the schedule to not apply correctly.

  5. Re-enable Digital Wellbeing settings.

Go to Google Home app → your Nest device → Settings → Digital Wellbeing. Toggle the Downtime feature off, wait 10 seconds, then toggle it back on and reconfigure your schedule. Also confirm Filters is set to your preference — the Filters setting controls which content types are blocked during downtime hours.
