Speaker Group Playback Not Working / Out of Sync

Google Nest Nest Smart Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Nest speaker group audio failing to play on all speakers is usually caused by one speaker in the group being offline or on a different Wi-Fi network segment. Open the Google Home app, check which speaker is offline, restart it, and re-test the group. If audio is out of sync, remove and re-add the group in the Google Home app.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Mini
  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Home
  • Google Home Mini
  • Google Nest Hub
  • Google Nest Hub Max

Common Causes

  • One speaker in the group is offline or unreachable on the network
  • Speakers on different Wi-Fi bands (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz) causing synchronisation issues
  • Speaker group stale in Google Home app — group needs to be recreated
  • Network latency between speakers causing audio sync drift over time
  • Google Home app cache corrupted — app shows speakers as online but they are not syncing

How to Fix It

  1. Check which speakers are online in the Google Home app.

Open the Google Home app and look at each speaker in the group. Offline speakers show a greyed-out icon. Tap any offline speaker and select Reboot Device. A speaker that has been offline is the most common cause of group playback failures.

  2. Ensure all speakers are on the same Wi-Fi band.

For best group synchronisation, all Nest speakers in a group should connect to the same Wi-Fi band (either all 2.4 GHz or all 5 GHz). In your router settings, check which band each speaker is using. For routers with a single combined SSID, the speakers may automatically connect to different bands — separate the SSIDs if sync is poor.

  3. Delete and recreate the speaker group.

In the Google Home app, go to the Speaker Group settings and tap Remove Group. Then tap the + icon to Create a Speaker Group and re-add all the speakers. A freshly created group re-establishes the sync protocol between devices.

  4. Restart all speakers in the group.

In the Google Home app, select each speaker > Settings > Reboot Device. Alternatively, unplug all speakers, wait 30 seconds, and plug them all back in. Allow 2 minutes for all speakers to fully boot before testing group playback.

  5. Clear the Google Home app cache.

On Android: go to Settings > Apps > Google Home > Storage > Clear Cache. On iOS: delete and reinstall the Google Home app. After clearing the cache, open the app and test the speaker group again. A corrupted app cache frequently shows speakers as available but prevents sync.

When to Call a Professional

Group playback is a software and network feature — no hardware service is needed.
