Broadcast Not Working / Not Reaching All Speakers
Google Nest Smart Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Google Nest Broadcast not working usually means one or more Nest devices are offline, Do Not Disturb is active, or the devices are in different Google Homes. Say 'Hey Google, broadcast hello' and check which devices respond — non-responding devices need troubleshooting individually.
Affected Models
- Google Nest Mini
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Hub
- Google Nest Hub Max
- All Google Nest devices
Common Causes
- Nest device in another room offline or disconnected from Wi-Fi
- Do Not Disturb active on receiving device — silences broadcasts
- Devices registered to different Google Home groups — broadcast is home-wide, not network-wide
- Google Assistant Voice Match not recognizing the speaker's voice — assistant not triggering
- Broadcast command misheard — Google Assistant did not register the broadcast request
How to Fix It
-
Check each Nest device's online status.
Open the Google Home app home screen — each device shows as active (colored icon) or offline (grey). A device must be online to receive broadcasts. If a device is offline, check its power supply and Wi-Fi connection, then restart it.
-
Turn off Do Not Disturb on all devices.
Open the Google Home app and check each device's Digital Wellbeing settings. Turn off Do Not Disturb on any device that is not receiving broadcasts. Broadcast is designed to cut through Do Not Disturb in some firmware versions, but this behavior is not consistent — turning it off is the safest fix.
-
Use the correct broadcast command.
The full command syntax is: 'Hey Google, broadcast [your message]' — for example, 'Hey Google, broadcast dinner is ready.' Alternatively you can say 'Hey Google, tell everyone [message].' Do not pause too long after 'broadcast' before your message — Google sometimes times out and does not capture the message.
-
Test individual devices with direct speak commands.
Say 'Hey Google, play music on the bedroom speaker' to verify the specific device responds to Google Assistant commands at all. If the device does not respond to direct commands, it is not properly set up in your Google Home and cannot receive broadcasts. Re-add the device to your Google Home if it is unresponsive to all commands.
-
Ensure all devices are in the same Google Home.
In the Google Home app, all devices that should receive broadcasts must be listed under the same home (e.g., 'My House'). If a device is listed under a different home (even if it is the same physical location), it will not receive broadcasts from the other home. Move all devices to the same home: device Settings → Remove → re-add under the correct home.
