Volume Too Low

Google Nest Smart Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Nest speaker stuck at low volume is usually caused by a default volume setting in the Google Home app, a scheduled Quiet Hours rule, or the speaker being placed against a wall that absorbs sound. Say 'Hey Google, set volume to 8' to override any app settings and confirm the speaker hardware is not at fault.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen)
  • Google Home
  • Google Home Mini
  • Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen)

Common Causes

  • Default volume in Google Home app set too low
  • Quiet Hours or Do Not Disturb mode active in the Google Home app
  • Speaker facing a wall or placed in a corner — sound directed away from the listener
  • Speaker volume was reduced during a previous voice command or routine
  • Alarm and timer volumes set independently and configured lower than media volume

How to Fix It

  1. Say 'Hey Google, set volume to 8' or 'Hey Google, volume up'.

Google Nest speakers have volume levels from 1 to 10. If the speaker is at level 1 or 2, it will sound very quiet. Voice commands override any app-based settings immediately. Test at level 8 or 9 to confirm the hardware is working correctly.

  2. Check Quiet Hours or Do Not Disturb in the Google Home app.

Open the Google Home app → tap your speaker → tap the gear icon (Settings) → look for Quiet Hours or Do Not Disturb. If Quiet Hours are enabled during your current time, the speaker volume is capped. Disable Quiet Hours or adjust the schedule.

  3. Check the default volume setting.

In the Google Home app → tap your speaker → Settings → Default volumes. There are separate volume settings for media, calls, and alarms. Ensure media volume is set above 50%.

  4. Move the speaker to an open position.

Placing the speaker facing a wall or inside a shelf significantly reduces perceived loudness. Reposition it to face the room with at least 15 cm of clearance in front. The Nest Audio in particular is directional.

  5. Restart the Nest speaker.

Unplug the speaker from power, wait 10 seconds, and plug back in. After it restarts (about 1 minute), test the volume again. A restart can clear software glitches that cause volume to be capped below the set level.
