Microphone Not Working

Google Nest Smart Speaker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

When Google Nest stops responding to 'Hey Google', the microphone is either muted, obstructed, or has a software issue. The quickest fix is to check the microphone mute switch on the back and restart the device.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Nest Mini (1st & 2nd gen)
  • Google Home
  • Google Home Mini
  • Google Home Max

Common Causes

  • Microphone physically muted using the switch on the back of the device
  • Device placed inside a cabinet, shelf, or enclosed space
  • Background noise preventing wake word detection
  • Hey Google detection disabled in the Google Home app
  • Software bug requiring a restart or factory reset
  • Microphone hardware failure

How to Fix It

  1. Check the microphone mute switch on the back of the device.

Google Nest has a physical microphone switch. When muted, the indicator light turns orange. Slide the switch to unmute.

  2. Move the Nest to an open space away from walls and enclosed areas.

Placing the Nest in a bookshelf or cabinet significantly reduces microphone sensitivity. It needs open air around it.

  3. Open the Google Home app > your device > Settings and confirm Hey Google is enabled.

Hey Google detection can be turned off in the app. Go to Device Settings > Hey Google Sensitivity and make sure it is active.

  4. Restart the device by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plugging back in.

A software glitch can disable microphone input without any indication. A simple restart resolves this in many cases.

  5. If still not working, factory reset the device using the reset button on the base.

Hold the reset button for 15 seconds until you hear a reset sound. This wipes all settings — you will need to set up the device again in the Google Home app.

When to Call a Professional

If the microphone remains unresponsive after a factory reset with no physical obstructions, the microphone hardware has failed. Contact Google Support — Nest devices within warranty are typically replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my Google Nest microphone is muted?

The status light turns orange when the microphone is muted. You will also see an orange dot on the device. Slide the microphone switch on the back of the device to unmute.

Can Google Nest hear me from another room?

Typically no — the microphone range is roughly 3-5 metres in a quiet room. Background noise, walls, and closed doors significantly reduce this range. For whole-home coverage, use multiple Nest devices.
