News Briefing Not Working / No News

Google Nest Nest Smart Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Google Nest not reading the news is usually caused by the news source being removed from Google Home settings, or Personal Results being disabled. In the Google Home app, go to Settings > News and confirm your preferred news sources are selected. Also ensure Personal Results is enabled for the speaker.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Mini
  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Home
  • Google Home Mini
  • Google Nest Hub
  • Google Nest Hub Max

Common Causes

  • News sources not configured in the Google Home app settings
  • Personal Results disabled — news briefing requires personalisation to be on
  • Selected news source no longer available or changed its feed
  • Google Assistant not recognising the command phrasing
  • No news articles available for the current time (morning briefings run on a schedule)

How to Fix It

  1. Configure news sources in the Google Home app.

Open the Google Home app > Settings > Services > News. Select the news sources you want included in your briefing (e.g. BBC, NPR, Reuters). If no sources are selected, saying 'Hey Google, play the news' will return no content.

  2. Enable Personal Results.

Open the Google Home app, tap the speaker > Settings > Recognition and Sharing > Personal Results. Toggle it on. Personal Results is required for the news briefing to personalise content and play your selected sources.

  3. Use the correct command phrasing.

Say: 'Hey Google, play the news' or 'Hey Google, what's in the news?' Alternatively: 'Hey Google, tell me my Flash Briefing.' If the speaker responds but says there is no news, the issue is with the news sources configured in the app.

  4. Remove and re-add a news source.

In Google Home app > Settings > Services > News, remove one of your current sources, save, then add it back. This refreshes the feed connection. Sometimes a news source's feed URL changes and removing and re-adding it fetches the updated endpoint.

  5. Check if the news source requires a premium subscription.

Some news sources on Google Home require a paid subscription to the publication. If you selected a source that requires login credentials (such as The New York Times or Wall Street Journal), you may need to link that subscription in your Google account. Switch to a free source like BBC or NPR to confirm the briefing works without a subscription.
