Not Playing Music

Google Nest Smart Speaker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Google Nest responds to the command but no music plays, or it says it cannot find the service. This is almost always caused by a music service not being linked in the Google Home app, no default music service set, or a subscription issue with the streaming service.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Nest Mini (2nd Gen)
  • Google Home
  • Google Home Mini
  • Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen)

Common Causes

  • No music service linked in the Google Home app
  • No default music service selected
  • Spotify or YouTube Music account not connected
  • Music service subscription lapsed
  • Google account mismatch between app and speaker

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Google Home app, tap your profile icon, then Google Account Settings > Music.

This shows all your linked music services. If none are linked, add Spotify, YouTube Music, or another supported service.

  2. Set a default music service in the same Music settings screen.

Without a default, Google does not know where to play music and the command fails.

  3. Unlink and relink your music service if you recently changed your streaming password.

Go to the Music settings, remove the service, then add it again and log in with your current credentials.

  4. Ask specifically: Hey Google, play [song name] on Spotify.

Specifying the service bypasses default service issues and confirms whether the service itself is working.

When to Call a Professional

Music playback issues are account and settings problems. No hardware repair is needed.
