Keeps Rebooting / Reboot Loop

Google Nest Nest Smart Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Google Nest speaker stuck in a reboot loop is most often caused by a faulty or underpowered power adapter, or a corrupted firmware update. Try a different power outlet and the original power cable first. If rebooting continues, perform a factory reset by holding the factory reset button for 15 seconds.

Affected Models

  • Google Nest Mini
  • Google Nest Audio
  • Google Home
  • Google Home Mini
  • Google Nest Hub
  • Google Nest Hub Max

Common Causes

  • Faulty or underpowered power adapter not delivering stable voltage
  • Corrupted firmware update that forces a repeated restart cycle
  • Power strip or extension cord with a loose connection causing intermittent power
  • Hardware fault in the speaker (less common — usually affects older units)
  • Overheating from placement in an enclosed space

How to Fix It

  1. Check the power connection.

Unplug the Nest speaker from the wall outlet and plug it into a different outlet — not a power strip or extension cord. Ensure you are using the original power adapter that came with the speaker. A third-party adapter with insufficient wattage is a common cause of reboot loops.

  2. Allow the speaker to complete its update.

If the speaker just received a firmware update, the reboot loop may be part of the normal update installation process. Leave it plugged in and undisturbed for 10–15 minutes. If it settles into normal operation, the update has completed.

  3. Move the speaker to a cooler location.

Nest speakers placed in enclosed cabinets, near heat vents, or in small rooms with poor airflow can overheat and trigger protective reboots. Move the speaker to an open, cool location and allow it to cool for 30 minutes before testing.

  4. Factory reset the speaker.

For Nest Audio: hold the centre of the top panel for 15 seconds until the lights flash and a sound confirms the reset. For Nest Mini: hold the factory reset button on the bottom for 15 seconds. For Google Home: hold the factory reset button (microphone mute button on original Home) for 15 seconds. After reset, set up the speaker fresh in the Google Home app.

  5. Contact Google support for a replacement.

If a factory reset does not stop the reboot loop and the power supply is confirmed good, the speaker has an internal hardware fault. Google Nest speakers are not user-serviceable. Contact Google support (support.google.com) — speakers within the 1-year warranty are replaced free of charge.

When to Call a Professional

If a factory reset does not stop the reboot loop and the power supply is confirmed good, the speaker's internal hardware (power regulator or firmware flash) has failed and the device needs replacement.
