Timer Not Working
Google Nest Smart Speaker
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Google Nest timer not working is most often caused by the speaker volume being at zero (timer fires silently) or Do Not Disturb being active. Say 'Hey Google, show my timers' to check what is set, then 'Hey Google, resume' if a timer is paused.
Affected Models
- Google Nest Mini
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Hub
- Google Nest Hub Max
- All Google Nest smart speaker models
Common Causes
- Speaker volume at zero — timer alert fires silently
- Do Not Disturb active — silences all alerts including timers on some Nest firmware versions
- Timer set on a different Nest device — timers fire on the device where they were set
- Google account sync issue preventing the timer from registering in the cloud
- Wi-Fi outage at timer creation time preventing the timer from saving to Google servers
How to Fix It
-
Check the speaker volume.
Say 'Hey Google, set volume to 5' before setting a timer. Nest speakers fire the timer alert at the device's current volume — if it is set to zero or muted, the alert is silent. Also check whether the device is physically muted via a mute switch on the back of the Nest Audio or Nest Mini.
-
Check Do Not Disturb.
Say 'Hey Google, turn off Do Not Disturb' or open the Google Home app → your Nest device → Settings → Digital Wellbeing → Do Not Disturb. Confirm it is off and check whether a scheduled quiet time window is active. Do Not Disturb on Nest devices blocks timer alerts on certain firmware versions.
-
Verify which device has the timer.
Timers are set on the specific Nest device you spoke to and fire on that device only. Say 'Hey Google, show my timers' to the Nest device you believe has the timer — it will list all active timers. If you set a timer in one room but moved to another, the alert will only sound from the original device.
-
Check the Google Home app activity.
Open the Google Home app → your Nest device → View device activity. The activity log shows what Google heard when you set the timer — if it misheard '15 minutes' as '50 minutes', you will see the misinterpretation here. Speak timer commands clearly and distinctly: 'Hey Google, set a timer for fifteen minutes.'
-
Restart the Nest device.
Unplug the Nest speaker from power, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait 60 seconds for it to fully reconnect to Wi-Fi and Google services. A cloud sync issue occasionally prevents timers from registering — a restart clears this without affecting your settings.
When to Call a Professional
Google Nest timers are a cloud service. If timers consistently fail to fire after checking all settings, factory reset the device. Contact Google support if the problem persists after a reset.
