No Sound
LG Smart TV
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Press the Mute button on the remote and check the volume indicator on screen. Go to Settings → Sound → Sound Out and confirm it is set to TV Speaker, not an external device that is off. A power cycle (unplug 60 seconds) clears most webOS audio glitches.
Affected Models
- LG OLED C-series
- LG QNED series
- LG NanoCell series
- LG UHD series
- LG webOS TV (all years)
Common Causes
- TV accidentally muted via remote or Magic Remote gesture
- Sound output set to Bluetooth or optical device that is off
- HDMI-ARC / eARC handshake failure with soundbar
- webOS audio process crash requiring a reboot
- Internal speaker fault (rare)
How to Fix It
-
Check mute and volume
Press Mute once to toggle. Then increase volume with the + button. The LG Magic Remote has a gesture that can accidentally mute the TV.
-
Check Sound Out setting
Settings → Sound → Sound Out. Make sure it is set to TV Speaker. If it shows Bluetooth Soundbar or Optical, the TV is routing audio to an external device that may be off or out of range.
-
Restart the TV
Hold the power button on the remote for 5 seconds until the TV restarts. A webOS audio process crash is a common cause of sudden silence and clears on restart.
-
Check HDMI-ARC settings (if using a soundbar)
Settings → Sound → Sound Out → HDMI ARC. Toggle it off, wait 10 seconds, then back on. Also check that the soundbar's ARC input is selected. Try a different HDMI cable if audio is intermittent.
-
Factory reset
Settings → General → Reset to Initial Settings. This resolves corrupted audio settings in webOS. After reset, go to Settings → Sound → Sound Out and re-select your preferred output.
When to Call a Professional
If no sound comes from the TV speakers even after a factory reset with Sound Out set to TV Speaker, the internal audio amplifier board has failed.
Frequently Asked Questions
LG TV has sound on some apps but not others — why?
Some apps (Netflix, Disney+) use Dolby Atmos or DTS audio that requires the correct passthrough setting. Go to Settings → Sound → Additional Settings → Digital Sound Out and try setting it to Auto or PCM.
LG TV audio cuts out when using HDMI ARC with a soundbar
HDMI-ARC dropout is usually a cable or handshake issue. Try an HDMI 2.1 cable certified for eARC, and make sure both the TV and soundbar have the same ARC/eARC setting enabled.
No sound after LG TV software update — how to fix?
A webOS update can reset audio settings. Go to Settings → Sound → Sound Out and re-select TV Speaker or your soundbar. Also check Settings → Sound → Additional Settings → Digital Sound Out.
