Screen Flickering

LG Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Disable Energy Saving under Settings → Picture → Energy Saving → Off to stop dimming-related flicker. Re-seat all HDMI cables — a loose connection causes signal drops that look like flickering. If the flicker appears as a pattern of flashing lines, the OLED or LCD panel itself may be failing.

Affected Models

  • LG OLED C2 / C3 / C4
  • LG QNED series
  • LG NanoCell series
  • LG UHD series
  • LG OLED evo (G-series)

Common Causes

  • Energy Saving mode reducing brightness suddenly
  • Loose or damaged HDMI cable causing signal dropout
  • Refresh rate mismatch with the connected device
  • TruMotion (motion smoothing) conflict with content frame rate
  • Failing OLED or LCD panel — hardware fault

How to Fix It

  1. Disable Energy Saving

Settings → Picture → Energy Saving → Off. This stops the TV from dynamically dimming the backlight, which causes visible flicker in some content.

  2. Re-seat all HDMI cables

Unplug each HDMI cable from both ends and reconnect firmly. A cable with a loose fit causes flickering that looks like a panel problem.

  3. Disable TruMotion

Settings → Picture → Additional Settings → TruMotion → Off. Motion interpolation at incorrect frame rates can produce strobing or flickering on LG TVs.

  4. Check the source device refresh rate

If connected to a PC or console, make sure the output resolution and refresh rate match an LG-supported mode (e.g. 4K@60Hz or 1080p@60Hz). Unsupported modes cause signal instability.

  5. Test with no external inputs

Disconnect all HDMI devices and use the webOS home screen or a built-in app. If flickering disappears, the issue is the connected device or cable, not the TV panel.

When to Call a Professional

If flickering is visible with no cables connected and no apps open (i.e. on the webOS home screen itself), the panel is failing. LG OLED panels are eligible for panel warranty claims — contact LG support.

Frequently Asked Questions

LG OLED TV flickering in dark scenes — is this normal?

Some OLED flicker in very dark scenes is caused by the Auto Brightness Limiter (ABL) reducing power. Go to Settings → Picture → OLED/Pixel Brightness and reduce it slightly, or set Energy Saving to Off.

LG TV flickers only on Netflix but not other apps — why?

Netflix defaults to Dolby Vision which uses dynamic tone mapping. Try disabling Dolby Vision: Settings → Picture → Picture Mode → switch from Dolby Vision to Cinema or ISF Expert. Test if flickering stops.

LG TV screen flashes green or pink — what does it mean?

Colored flashes usually indicate an HDMI signal handshake failure or a failing panel sub-pixel. Try a different HDMI cable first. If the colored flashing appears with no cables connected, the panel needs service.
