Turns Off By Itself

LG Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Disable Auto Power Off under Settings → General → Timers → Auto Power Off → Off. Check No Signal Auto Power Off: Settings → General → Timers → No Signal Auto Off → Off. If the TV still shuts off during use, Simplink (HDMI-CEC) from a connected device may be sending a power-off command.

Affected Models

  • LG OLED C-series
  • LG QNED series
  • LG NanoCell series
  • LG UHD series
  • LG webOS TV (all years)

Common Causes

  • Auto Power Off timer set to shut down after inactivity
  • No Signal Auto Power Off detecting a lost HDMI signal
  • HDMI-CEC (Simplink) command from a connected device
  • Overheating causing thermal protection shutdown
  • Power supply instability under heavy load

How to Fix It

  1. Disable Auto Power Off

Settings → General → Timers → Auto Power Off → Off. This feature turns the TV off after a set period of no remote input.

  2. Disable No Signal Auto Off

Settings → General → Timers → No Signal Auto Off → Off. If the HDMI signal drops momentarily (e.g. console in sleep mode), this can trigger the TV to power off.

  3. Disable Simplink (HDMI-CEC)

Settings → General → External Device Settings → Simplink (HDMI-CEC) → Off. A game console, soundbar, or cable box can send a power-off command via CEC that shuts the TV down.

  4. Check for overheating

Make sure the TV has adequate clearance (at least 4 inches on all sides). If the vents are hot to the touch and the TV shuts off during demanding content, it is thermally throttling.

  5. Check the power supply

Plug the TV directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip or surge protector. A strip with multiple devices can cause voltage sag that triggers an LG protection shutdown.

When to Call a Professional

If the TV shuts off after a consistent period of use (e.g. always after 30 minutes) and disabling all timers does not help, overheating or a power supply fault is likely — schedule a technician visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

LG TV turns off after 4 hours — is there a timer set?

Yes — LG TVs have an Auto Power Off that defaults to 4 hours in some regions. Go to Settings → General → Timers → Auto Power Off and set it to Off.

LG TV turns off when I turn on my soundbar — why?

This is a Simplink (HDMI-CEC) conflict. Your soundbar is sending a CEC command that the TV interprets as a power-off signal. Disable Simplink at Settings → General → External Device Settings → Simplink.

LG OLED turns off during gaming — overheating?

LG OLEDs have strict thermal protection to prevent panel burn-in damage. Ensure the TV is wall-mounted with clear space behind it, or on a stand with no cabinet enclosure blocking airflow.
