No Sound / Audio Not Working
Panasonic Smart TV
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Panasonic TV no sound is most often caused by the TV being muted, the audio output set to an external device instead of the built-in speakers, or a software glitch. Check mute, check audio output settings, and perform a power reset before assuming a hardware fault.
Affected Models
- Panasonic TX series (LED/LCD)
- Panasonic OLED TV (LZ/MZ/LX series)
- Panasonic Smart TV (My Home Screen)
Common Causes
- TV muted or volume at zero
- Audio output set to External Speaker or HDMI ARC — routing sound to a soundbar that is off or disconnected
- Software glitch after a firmware update silencing audio
- HDMI ARC handshake failure with a connected soundbar or AV receiver
- Built-in speaker failure — requires professional repair
How to Fix It
-
Check mute and volume level.
Press the Mute button on the Panasonic remote to toggle mute off. Also press Volume Up several times to ensure volume is not set to zero. Panasonic remotes have the mute button near the volume buttons — it is easy to accidentally activate.
-
Check the audio output setting.
Go to Settings → Sound → Speakers on the Panasonic TV. If the output is set to HDMI (ARC), External, or a Bluetooth device, the built-in speakers are bypassed. Set the output to TV Speakers to restore audio from the built-in speakers.
-
Power reset the TV.
Unplug the Panasonic TV from the wall for 60 seconds, then plug back in. Firmware updates on Panasonic Smart TVs can occasionally cause the audio driver to reset to an incorrect state — a power reset restores normal operation. Also restart any soundbar or AV receiver connected via HDMI ARC.
-
Check the HDMI ARC settings if using a soundbar.
Confirm the soundbar is connected to the Panasonic TV's HDMI port labeled 'ARC' (usually HDMI 2 on Panasonic models). Go to Settings → Sound → HDMI Input and confirm ARC is enabled. Switch the soundbar off and on — ARC handshake failures are common after power outages or firmware updates.
-
Test with headphones.
Plug headphones into the Panasonic TV headphone jack (3.5mm, if available) or pair via Bluetooth. If audio plays in headphones but not the built-in speakers, the speakers or their connections have failed. If no audio plays anywhere, the audio processor on the main board is at fault.
When to Call a Professional
If audio is absent from all sources including built-in apps and the headphone output, the audio processor on the Panasonic main board has likely failed. Contact Panasonic support or a TV repair specialist.
