No Sound
Philips Smart TV
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Philips Smart TV with no sound is most often set to mute or has its audio output routed to an external device (soundbar or ARC/eARC) that is off. Press the Mute button on the remote to check, then go to Settings > Sound > Audio output and confirm it is set to TV Speakers.
Affected Models
- Philips 4K UHD Series
- Philips OLED Series
- Philips The One Series
- Philips Ambilight TV Series
Common Causes
- TV is muted
- Audio output is set to HDMI ARC or optical — external speakers are off or disconnected
- App-specific audio fault — audio works in other apps
- Software crash affecting the audio stack
How to Fix It
-
Press the Mute button on the remote. Check that the volume bar appears on screen and is not at zero.
-
Go to Settings > Sound > Audio output. If it is set to HDMI ARC, Optical, or Bluetooth, change it to TV Speakers and test.
If you have a soundbar connected via HDMI ARC, the TV routes audio to it automatically. If the soundbar is off or the cable is unplugged, the TV produces no sound.
-
If sound is missing only in one app (e.g. Netflix but not YouTube), close and reopen the app. If the issue persists, clear the app's cache: Settings > Apps > [App name] > Clear cache.
-
Perform a soft reset by holding the power button on the TV for 10 seconds. A software crash affecting the audio renderer is cleared by a hard restart.
-
If no sound appears on any source or app after all of the above, go to Settings > TV Settings > Factory Reset to restore default audio settings.
A factory reset erases your apps and settings — note down your WiFi password and any custom picture or sound profiles before proceeding.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Philips TV has sound on broadcast TV but not on HDMI — why?
HDMI audio requires the connected device to send an audio signal. Check that the source device (game console, Blu-ray player, streaming box) is not muted and that its audio output is set to HDMI. Also try a different HDMI cable — HDMI cable faults often affect audio before video.
