Not Turning On

Philips Smart TV

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Philips Smart TV that will not turn on is most often caused by the TV being stuck in standby, a loose power connection, or a failed software update that left the TV unresponsive. Hold the power button on the TV itself (not the remote) for 10 seconds to force a restart, then try again.

Affected Models

  • Philips 4K UHD Series (2019–2024)
  • Philips OLED Series
  • Philips The One Series
  • Philips Ambilight TV Series

Common Causes

  • TV is stuck in standby and not responding to the remote
  • Power surge has tripped an internal protection circuit
  • Failed over-the-air software update left the TV unresponsive
  • Power board failure — no standby light at all

How to Fix It

  1. Check whether the standby LED on the front of the TV is on (red or white). If it is on, the TV has power but is not waking up. Press and hold the power button on the TV itself for 10 seconds.

The remote may have a dead battery or have lost its pairing. Using the physical button on the TV rules out the remote as the cause.

  2. If no standby LED is visible, unplug the TV from the wall. Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in. Press the power button on the TV.

A full power cycle clears any fault state in the power board's protection circuit. Do not skip the 60-second wait — some capacitors hold charge for up to 30 seconds.

  3. If the TV was updating its software when it lost power, it may be in a recovery loop. Hold the power button on the TV for 30 seconds while it is unplugged, then plug it back in.

Some Philips models enter a recovery mode when a software update fails mid-install. The TV will attempt to re-download and reinstall the software on its next boot.

  4. Check the wall outlet and power cord. Test the outlet with another device. Inspect the power cord for any visible damage.

  5. If the standby LED is off and the TV does not respond to any of the above steps, the power board has likely failed and requires professional service.

Philips TVs have a 2-year manufacturer warranty in most markets. Contact Philips support with your model number and serial number.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Philips TV standby light blinks but the screen stays black — what does that mean?

A blinking standby light on a Philips TV usually indicates a self-diagnostic fault code. Count the number of blinks in the repeating pattern (for example 3 blinks, pause, 3 blinks). Contact Philips support and report the blink pattern — each pattern corresponds to a specific internal fault.
