Bluetooth Not Working

Samsung Smart TV

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Samsung TV Bluetooth not working is most often caused by the Bluetooth device already being paired to another device, or by the TV's Bluetooth device list being full. Deleting old pairings and putting the headphones or speaker into fresh pairing mode before scanning resolves the majority of cases. Some Samsung TV models limit Bluetooth to Samsung-brand devices only — third-party headphones may not be compatible.

Affected Models

  • Samsung QLED
  • Samsung Crystal UHD
  • Samsung The Frame
  • Samsung Neo QLED
  • Most Samsung Smart TVs (2016+)

Common Causes

  • Bluetooth device is still connected to or paired with a phone, tablet, or previous TV
  • Too many saved Bluetooth pairings on the TV — older entries are preventing new connections
  • Bluetooth device is not in pairing mode when the TV scans for devices
  • TV firmware needs updating to resolve a Bluetooth compatibility bug
  • Some Samsung TV models only support Samsung-brand Bluetooth audio devices
  • Bluetooth device is out of the effective range (typically 10 metres line-of-sight)

How to Fix It

  1. Delete all existing Bluetooth pairings on the TV: Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List > select device > Delete.

The TV can only maintain a limited number of saved pairings. Clearing old entries forces a clean pairing session.

  2. Put the Bluetooth device into pairing mode before scanning. On most headphones this means holding the power or Bluetooth button until a light flashes rapidly.

The TV cannot discover a device that is not actively broadcasting in pairing mode. Connect it to its last paired device first to disconnect, then put it into fresh pairing mode.

  3. On the TV, go to Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List > Add New Device and start a fresh pairing.

Do this immediately after putting the Bluetooth device into pairing mode — most devices exit pairing mode after 30 to 60 seconds.

  4. Update the TV firmware: Settings > Support > Software Update > Update Now.

Samsung releases Bluetooth compatibility updates regularly. Pairing failures with specific headphone models are often resolved by a firmware update.

  5. Cold boot both the TV and the Bluetooth device: unplug the TV for 30 seconds, turn off the headphones or speaker completely, then pair fresh.

A full restart of both devices clears cached connection states that can prevent a successful pairing.

When to Call a Professional

Samsung TV Bluetooth issues are almost always software or pairing related and do not require professional repair. A factory reset resolves persistent Bluetooth bugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Samsung TV only show Samsung Bluetooth devices?

Some Samsung TV models — particularly older QLED and UHD models — are configured to only display Samsung-brand Bluetooth audio devices in the pairing list. Check the TV's spec sheet for your model to confirm third-party Bluetooth compatibility. Firmware updates sometimes expand device support.

How far can Bluetooth reach on a Samsung TV?

Samsung TVs typically support Bluetooth up to about 10 metres (33 feet) in line-of-sight conditions. Walls, other electronics, and Wi-Fi interference can reduce this range significantly. For longer distances, use wired audio or a Wi-Fi-based wireless speaker.

Can I use Bluetooth headphones and the TV speakers at the same time on a Samsung TV?

On most Samsung TVs, connecting a Bluetooth device automatically switches the Sound Output away from the TV speakers. Some newer Samsung models support Multiroom and dual audio output — check Settings > Sound > Additional Settings > Multi-Output Audio.
