Remote Not Working
Sharp Smart TV
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Sharp TV remote that stops working is most often caused by dead batteries, a blocked IR signal path, or sticky buttons jamming the circuit. Replace the batteries first — it fixes the problem in the majority of cases.
Affected Models
- Sharp Aquos 4K
- Sharp Android TV
- Sharp LC series
- Sharp 4T-C series
Common Causes
- Dead or low batteries
- IR signal path obstructed — object in front of the TV sensor
- Sticky or stuck button completing a circuit and jamming the remote
- Remote dropped and internal ribbon disconnected
- TV IR sensor damaged or obstructed by a TV mount
- Sunlight or bright light hitting the TV IR sensor and causing interference
How to Fix It
-
Replace the batteries.
Replace with fresh AA or AAA batteries (check the battery compartment for size). Ensure the batteries are inserted with the correct polarity (+/−). Even batteries that seem charged can lose enough voltage to prevent reliable IR transmission.
-
Check for obstructions in front of the TV sensor.
The IR sensor on Sharp TVs is typically at the bottom-centre or bottom-right of the bezel. Remove any objects (soundbars, decorations, cables) that may be blocking the sensor. Point the remote directly at the sensor from within 5 metres.
-
Test the remote with a phone camera.
Open the camera app on any smartphone. Point the remote at the camera and press any button. If the IR LED at the front of the remote is working, you will see a white or purple flash on the camera screen. If you see no flash, the remote has failed and needs to be replaced.
-
Clean the remote buttons.
Sticky buttons can press continuously and jam the signal. Clean around the buttons with a slightly damp cloth or cotton swab. For severely sticky remotes, remove the batteries and press all buttons rapidly several times to dislodge any stuck contact.
-
Use the Sharp TV buttons or a remote app.
Sharp TVs have physical buttons on the TV body (usually on the back or bottom edge) that allow basic operation without a remote. You can also use the Sharp Smart Remote app for Android and iOS, or any universal remote programmed with the Sharp code.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I control my Sharp TV without a remote?
Sharp TVs have control buttons on the TV itself — typically on the back panel or the bottom edge. You can also download the Sharp Smart Remote app (search your phone's app store) and control the TV over Wi-Fi. Universal remotes like the Logitech Harmony and many supermarket brands include Sharp TV codes. For a permanent fix, Sharp replacement remotes are inexpensive and widely available online.
