HDMI Not Working / No Signal / No Input Detected

Sony Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Sony Bravia HDMI not working is most often caused by the TV being on the wrong input source, a loose cable, or the connected device not outputting a signal. Check the input source first — press the Input/Source button on the Sony remote and select the correct HDMI port number.

Affected Models

  • Sony Bravia A80/A90 (OLED)
  • Sony Bravia X90/X95 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia X80/X85 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia KD series
  • Sony Bravia XR series

Common Causes

  • Wrong input selected on the TV — TV showing HDMI 1 while the device is connected to HDMI 2
  • Loose or faulty HDMI cable
  • Connected device not powered on or not outputting video
  • HDMI EDID handshake failure between TV and source device
  • HDMI port physically damaged from frequent cable insertion/removal

How to Fix It

  1. Select the correct input source.

Press the Input or Source button on the Sony Bravia remote. A list of available HDMI inputs appears — select the numbered HDMI port matching where the cable is connected on the TV's back panel. Check the cable connection physically to confirm it is in HDMI 1, 2, 3, or 4 as labeled on the TV.

  2. Recheck and reseat the HDMI cable.

Unplug the HDMI cable from both the TV and the source device (games console, streaming box, Blu-ray player) and firmly reseat it at both ends. HDMI connectors can work slightly loose from normal use and cause intermittent 'no signal' errors. If possible, try a different HDMI cable — a faulty cable is a very common and inexpensive fix.

  3. Power cycle the source device.

Turn off the connected device completely (not sleep mode), unplug it from the wall for 30 seconds, then power it back on. Also restart the Sony Bravia by unplugging it for 60 seconds. HDMI handshake failures between the TV and source device are common — a full power cycle of both devices forces a fresh handshake.

  4. Change the HDMI signal format to Standard.

Sony Bravia TVs have an HDMI signal format setting per port. Go to Settings → Channels & Inputs → HDMI → the specific HDMI port → HDMI Signal Format → select Standard (not Enhanced). Some older devices cannot output the Enhanced or Auto format — setting it to Standard resolves no-signal issues with older games consoles, Blu-ray players, and AV receivers.

  5. Try the device on a different HDMI port.

Plug the HDMI cable into a different port on the Sony Bravia and select that input. If the device works on another port, the original port may have a hardware fault. Note: the ARC/eARC port on Sony Bravia has a different function than the other HDMI ports — connecting a standard device to the ARC port still works, but the ARC port also carries audio back to a soundbar.

When to Call a Professional

If a specific Sony Bravia HDMI port is not detected even after trying a new cable and confirmed-working device, the HDMI port on the TV main board has failed. Sony service can replace the board.
