No Sound / Audio Not Working

Sony Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Sony Bravia no sound is most often caused by the TV being muted, the volume routed to a connected soundbar or audio device instead of the built-in speakers, or a software glitch. Check the mute button, the audio output setting, and try a power reset before assuming a hardware fault.

Affected Models

  • Sony Bravia A80/A90 (OLED)
  • Sony Bravia X90/X95 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia X80/X85 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia KD series
  • Sony Bravia XR series

Common Causes

  • TV muted or volume set to zero
  • Audio output set to External Speaker or ARC/eARC — sound going to a soundbar that is off
  • Software glitch silencing audio output after a system update
  • HDMI ARC/eARC handshake failure with a connected soundbar
  • Built-in speaker failure — less common, usually after physical damage

How to Fix It

  1. Check mute and volume settings.

Press the Mute button on the Sony remote to toggle mute off. Also press the volume up button several times to ensure the volume is not at zero. Sony Bravia remotes have the mute button near the top — it is easy to accidentally press during normal handling.

  2. Check the audio output setting.

Go to Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output (on Google TV models) or Settings → Sound → Speakers (on Android TV models). If the output is set to External Speaker, ARC, or a connected Bluetooth device, the built-in speakers are disabled. Switch the output to TV Speakers to hear audio from the built-in speakers.

  3. Power reset the TV.

Unplug the Sony Bravia from the wall for 60 seconds, then plug back in. Software updates on Sony Bravia can occasionally cause the audio driver to malfunction — a power reset restores normal audio without losing any settings. Also restart any connected soundbar or AV receiver and check its input selection.

  4. Check the HDMI ARC connection if using a soundbar.

If audio goes to a soundbar via HDMI ARC or eARC, confirm the soundbar is connected to the correct HDMI port — on Sony Bravia, the ARC port is labeled 'ARC' or 'eARC'. On the TV, go to Settings → Channels & Inputs → HDMI settings and ensure ARC is enabled. Try switching the soundbar off and on again — ARC handshake failures are common after software updates.

  5. Test with headphones to isolate the fault.

Plug headphones into the Sony Bravia headphone jack (if equipped) or use the Bluetooth headphone pairing. If audio is heard in headphones but not from the built-in speakers, the internal speakers or their connection to the main board have failed. If no audio is heard anywhere, the audio processing on the main board has failed.

When to Call a Professional

If the Sony Bravia has no sound from either the built-in speakers or via HDMI ARC to a soundbar, and a power reset does not help, a software reinstall or main board replacement may be required.
