Screen Flickering / Flashing / Unstable Image

Sony Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Sony Bravia screen flickering is most often caused by the Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL) activating on bright content, the Ambient Light Sensor adjusting backlight, or a loose HDMI cable. Try disabling the ambient light sensor and picture mode adjustments before assuming a hardware fault.

Affected Models

  • Sony Bravia A80/A90 (OLED)
  • Sony Bravia X90/X95 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia X80/X85 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia KD series
  • Sony Bravia XR series

Common Causes

  • Ambient Light Sensor automatically adjusting backlight brightness — looks like flickering when transitioning between light and dark scenes
  • Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL) on OLED models dimming during bright scenes
  • Loose or faulty HDMI cable causing signal instability
  • Software glitch in the picture processing — often introduced after an update
  • Backlight driver failure on LED models — requires professional repair

How to Fix It

  1. Disable the Ambient Light Sensor.

Go to Settings → Display & Sound → Picture → Advanced Settings → Brightness → Ambient Light Sensor and set it to Off. The ambient light sensor adjusts backlight brightness automatically when room lighting changes — this normal behavior looks like flickering to some viewers. Disabling it sets backlight to a fixed level and eliminates this form of apparent flickering.

  2. Change or turn off the Picture Mode.

Certain Sony Bravia picture modes (like Vivid or Auto) make aggressive brightness adjustments that look like flickering. Go to Settings → Display & Sound → Picture and switch to Standard or Cinema mode. Also turn off Motionflow (motion smoothing) — Settings → Display & Sound → Picture → Motion → Motionflow — as some viewers find this causes image instability.

  3. Check and replace the HDMI cable.

A loose or faulty HDMI cable causes the signal to drop momentarily, which appears as screen flickering or brief black flashes. Unplug and firmly reseat the HDMI cable at both the TV and the source device. If flickering only occurs on one HDMI input, try a new high-speed HDMI cable — inexpensive cables are a common cause of intermittent signal issues.

  4. Power reset the TV.

Unplug the Sony Bravia from the wall for 60 seconds and reconnect. Software updates occasionally introduce picture processing bugs that manifest as flickering — a power reset often resolves these. Also check in Settings → System → Software Update to confirm the latest firmware is installed.

  5. Test with no input sources connected.

If the flickering occurs on the TV's built-in apps (Netflix, YouTube, etc.) but NOT when no input is selected, the issue is with a connected device or cable. If the flickering occurs on everything including the TV's home screen and built-in apps, the issue is in the TV's panel or backlight system — this requires professional diagnosis.

When to Call a Professional

Flickering that occurs on all inputs including the built-in apps and persists after disabling the automatic brightness features usually indicates a hardware fault — backlight driver board on LED models, or an OLED panel issue.
