TV Won't Turn On / No Power

Sony Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Sony Bravia TV not turning on is most often fixed by a power reset — unplug the TV from the wall, wait 60 seconds, then plug back in. This clears the TV's internal memory and resolves most startup failures caused by software hangs or power supply glitches.

Affected Models

  • Sony Bravia A80/A90 (OLED)
  • Sony Bravia X90/X95 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia X80/X85 (LED)
  • Sony Bravia KD series
  • Sony Bravia XR series

Common Causes

  • Internal software hang requiring a power reset
  • Standby power supply failure — the TV shows a red standby light but will not start
  • Main board failure causing no response to power button
  • Remote control battery dead or IR sensor blocked
  • Power outlet or surge protector issue cutting power

How to Fix It

  1. Perform a power reset.

Unplug the Sony Bravia power cord from the wall outlet. Wait a full 60 seconds — do not skip this wait time; it allows capacitors to discharge and the TV's memory to clear. Plug back in and try to turn the TV on. This resolves the majority of Sony Bravia startup failures caused by software or power glitches.

  2. Try the power button on the TV body (not the remote).

Remote control issues — dead batteries or a faulty IR sensor — can make it appear the TV is not turning on when the TV itself is fine. Locate the physical power button on the Sony Bravia body (usually on the underside of the screen, or the back panel, or a joystick button on the rear bottom). If the TV turns on with the body button, replace the remote batteries or check that nothing is blocking the TV's IR sensor.

  3. Count the standby LED blink pattern.

When a Sony Bravia has an internal hardware fault, the standby LED on the front of the TV blinks a specific number of times in a repeating pattern. Count the number of blinks in each repeating group — this is Sony's diagnostic blink code. Search 'Sony Bravia blink code [X] times' with the count to identify the failing component (power supply, main board, backlight, etc.).

  4. Check the power outlet and cables.

Plug the Sony Bravia into a different wall outlet — not a surge protector or extension lead. Some surge protectors fail or switch to protection mode after a power spike and block power to the TV. Also confirm the power cord is firmly seated in the TV's inlet — the IEC power connector can work loose.

  5. Perform a factory reset from the hidden menu.

If the Sony Bravia gets stuck at the logo or shows a brief power-up before switching off, a corrupted software installation may be the cause. On some Sony Bravia models, holding the power button on the TV body for 5 seconds while the TV is plugged in forces a factory reset. If the TV accepts a USB firmware update, Sony provides recovery firmware at sony.com/en/support — flash the latest firmware to recover from software corruption.

When to Call a Professional

If a power reset does not restore normal function and no Sony Bravia error blink codes are visible on the standby LED, the main board or power supply board has likely failed. Sony service or a TV repair technician can diagnose and replace the board.
