HDMI Not Working

TCL Roku TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Press the Home button and select the correct HDMI input from the Roku home screen input list. Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect firmly. If one HDMI port never works with any device, try a different port — the port itself may be faulty.

Affected Models

  • TCL 4-Series Roku TV
  • TCL 5-Series Roku TV
  • TCL 6-Series Roku TV
  • TCL 8-Series Roku TV
  • TCL QM8 / QM9 series

Common Causes

  • Wrong input selected on the Roku home screen
  • Loose or damaged HDMI cable
  • HDMI-CEC command conflict between TV and connected device
  • 4K content requiring HDMI 2.0 port but using HDMI 1.4 port
  • Failed HDMI port on the TV (physical damage)

How to Fix It

  1. Select the correct HDMI input

Press Home on the Roku remote → scroll left to open the input list → select the HDMI port your device is connected to (HDMI 1, 2, or 3). Roku does not auto-switch inputs.

  2. Re-seat the HDMI cable

Unplug the cable from both the TV and the source device and reconnect firmly. HDMI cables that are even slightly loose will not carry a stable signal.

  3. Try a different HDMI cable

Test with a known-good cable. For 4K content, use an HDMI 2.0 certified cable. Cheap cables often fail internally without visible damage.

  4. Disable HDMI-CEC on the Roku

Settings → System → Control other devices (CEC) → uncheck all options. A CEC command from a connected device can interfere with HDMI handshaking.

  5. Check which HDMI port supports 4K

On TCL 4-Series and 5-Series, only HDMI 2 is 4K/60Hz capable. Connect your 4K device to HDMI 2 if the picture is absent or downgraded on other ports.

When to Call a Professional

If all HDMI ports fail with multiple tested cables and devices, the HDMI controller chip on the mainboard has failed and requires board-level repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

TCL Roku TV says 'No Signal' on HDMI — what does that mean?

No Signal means the TV is on the right input but the connected device is not sending video. Check that the device is powered on and not in sleep mode, and that its video output is active.

PS5 or Xbox shows no picture on TCL Roku TV HDMI — why?

The console may be outputting 4K HDR which the HDMI port does not support. On the PS5: Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → Resolution → set to 1080p temporarily to confirm the cable and port work, then re-enable 4K.

TCL Roku TV HDMI ARC not passing audio to soundbar — how to fix?

HDMI ARC requires the correct port (usually HDMI 1 on TCL TVs) and CEC enabled on both devices. Check Settings → Audio → S/PDIF and ARC settings, and ensure the soundbar is set to its ARC input.
