Turns Off By Itself

TCL Roku TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Disable Auto Power Off: Settings → System → Power → Auto Power Off → Off. Disable HDMI-CEC: Settings → System → Control Other Devices (CEC) → uncheck all — a connected device may be sending a shutdown command. If the TV turns off during heavy use, overheating is likely — check ventilation.

Affected Models

  • TCL 4-Series Roku TV
  • TCL 5-Series Roku TV
  • TCL 6-Series Roku TV
  • TCL 8-Series Roku TV
  • TCL QM8 / QM9 series

Common Causes

  • Auto Power Off timer set after period of inactivity
  • HDMI-CEC command from a console, soundbar, or cable box
  • Overheating triggering thermal protection shutdown
  • Sleep timer left enabled
  • Power supply instability under heavy streaming load

How to Fix It

  1. Disable Auto Power Off

Settings → System → Power → Auto Power Off → Off. Roku TVs default to shutting off after 4 hours of no remote input.

  2. Disable the Sleep Timer

Settings → System → Power → Sleep Timer → Off. A sleep timer left set will turn the TV off at a fixed interval regardless of activity.

  3. Disable HDMI-CEC

Settings → System → Control Other Devices (CEC) → uncheck all CEC options. A game console entering sleep mode or a soundbar powering off can send a CEC off command to the TV.

  4. Check ventilation

Ensure at least 4 inches of clear space around the TV. If the TV is warm to the touch when it shuts off, it is thermally throttling. Do not place it inside a closed entertainment unit.

  5. Plug directly into a wall outlet

Remove power strips and surge protectors between the TV and the wall. A strip shared with high-draw devices can cause voltage sags that trigger the TV's protection circuit.

When to Call a Professional

If the TV shuts off at a consistent interval (e.g. always after 30 minutes) with all timers disabled and good ventilation, the power supply board is failing — contact TCL support.

Frequently Asked Questions

TCL Roku TV turns off after exactly 4 hours — why?

This is the Roku Auto Power Off feature, which is enabled by default. Disable it at Settings → System → Power → Auto Power Off → Off.

TCL TV turns off when I start my Xbox or PlayStation — why?

This is HDMI-CEC — the console is sending a device-link command that the TV interprets as a shutdown. Disable CEC at Settings → System → Control Other Devices (CEC) and uncheck all options.

TCL Roku TV shuts off during movies but not regular TV — is it overheating?

Streaming 4K movies puts a higher load on the processor, generating more heat. Check that the TV has open space around it and that the vents are not dusty. A can of compressed air on the vents can help.
