Casting Not Working

TCL Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Casting to a TCL TV fails almost always because the phone and TV are on different Wi-Fi networks, or the TV's casting feature is disabled. Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network (not a guest network) and that screen mirroring or Google Cast is enabled on the TV. Restarting both devices then usually makes casting work.

Affected Models

  • TCL 4-Series
  • TCL 5-Series
  • TCL 6-Series
  • TCL S4
  • TCL Q6
  • TCL QM8

Common Causes

  • The phone is connected to a different Wi-Fi network or a guest network that cannot see the TV
  • The TV's screen mirroring or Google Cast feature is disabled
  • A VPN on the phone is routing traffic away from the local network, hiding the TV from the casting protocol
  • The router is blocking multicast traffic, which casting protocols rely on
  • The TV firmware has a casting bug that requires an update to fix

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm that your phone and TCL TV are on the same Wi-Fi network. Check the Wi-Fi network name on both devices.

Guest networks isolate devices from each other by design. Move both the phone and TV to the main home network.

  2. On TCL Google TV, ensure Google Cast is enabled: Settings → Network → Cast → Enable Casting. On TCL Roku TV, check Settings → System → Screen mirroring → Prompt or Always Allow.

After a factory reset or firmware update, casting settings sometimes reset to Disabled or Prompt.

  3. Disable any VPN on your phone before casting.

A VPN changes the phone's network path and makes it appear to be on a different network. The TV cannot discover the phone's casting request while the VPN is active.

  4. Restart both the router and the TV.

Multicast discovery (used by Chromecast and AirPlay) can be interrupted by a stale ARP cache on the router. A router restart clears this.

  5. Update the TV firmware and the app you are casting from.

Chromecast built-in functionality requires the TV firmware to match the Google Cast protocol version. Updates keep these in sync.

When to Call a Professional

Casting issues are always software or network-related — no professional service is needed. If casting works from one phone but not another, the issue is with the phone's network connection or app version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Casting worked yesterday — why does it not work today?

The most common overnight change is the router assigning a new IP address to the TV, breaking the casting discovery. Restart the TV and router to refresh the network discovery. Assigning the TV a static IP in your router settings prevents this from recurring.

Does TCL TV support AirPlay from iPhone?

TCL Google TV models (S4, Q6, QM8) support AirPlay 2 for casting from iPhone and iPad. TCL Roku TV models support AirPlay through the Roku AirPlay feature on compatible models. Check your model's feature list — older TCL TVs may not support AirPlay.

I can cast YouTube but not Netflix — why?

Netflix uses its own casting protocol that requires a signed-in Netflix account on both the phone and the TV. Make sure you are signed into the same Netflix account on the TV. Also ensure the Netflix app on the TV is up to date.
