HDMI Not Working
TCL Smart TV
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
TCL TV HDMI not working usually means the TV is on the wrong input, the cable is loose, or there is an HDMI handshake issue between the TV and the connected device. Confirm the input source, reseat the HDMI cable at both ends, and try a different HDMI port. Most HDMI issues resolve without any hardware replacement.
Affected Models
- TCL 4-Series
- TCL 5-Series
- TCL 6-Series
- TCL S4
- TCL Q6
- TCL QM8
Common Causes
- The TV input is set to the wrong HDMI port — the source is plugged into HDMI 2 but the TV is showing HDMI 1
- The HDMI cable is loose at the TV end or at the source device end
- The HDMI cable is faulty or too old to support the resolution being requested (4K, HDR)
- The connected device (console, streaming stick, cable box) output resolution is not compatible with the TV
- The HDMI port on the TV or source device is physically damaged
How to Fix It
-
Press the Input or Source button on the remote and select the correct HDMI port number that your device is plugged into.
On Roku TV, press Home and navigate to the correct input tile. On Google TV, press the Input button and choose the right HDMI source.
-
Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and firmly reconnect it. Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
HDMI ports 1 and 2 are almost always standard. HDMI 2 on many TCL 6-Series models is the eARC port — try a different port if you do not need eARC.
-
Try a different HDMI cable, especially if you are connecting a 4K or HDR source.
Older HDMI 1.4 cables cannot carry 4K HDR signals reliably. Use an HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 cable for 4K sources.
-
Lower the output resolution on the connected device to 1080p and try again.
A source device outputting 4K or 4K 120Hz to a port that does not support it will show no signal. Lowering resolution confirms this is the cause.
-
Change the HDMI signal format on the TV. On TCL Google TV: Settings → Display & Sound → HDMI → HDMI Signal Format → Standard.
Setting Enhanced HDMI format on a port connected to a device that does not support it causes a blank screen. Switching to Standard resolves it.
When to Call a Professional
If all HDMI ports show no signal with a confirmed-working cable and device, the HDMI chip on the TV's main board may be faulty. HDMI board repair costs $80 to $150 at a TV repair shop. For budget TCL models, replacement may be more economical.
Frequently Asked Questions
My HDMI device worked yesterday — why is there no signal today?
HDMI handshake failures after a device firmware update, a power cycle, or a resolution change are common. Unplug the HDMI cable, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect. If the device updated overnight, lower its output resolution temporarily.
One HDMI port works but another does not — is the port broken?
Not necessarily — check that the non-working port is configured for the right signal format. Some TCL HDMI ports are enhanced (eARC/4K) and require the Enhanced format setting. If the port shows no signal with multiple cables and devices, it may need repair.
My TCL TV only has HDMI eARC — can I still connect a non-ARC soundbar?
Yes — eARC ports are backwards compatible with standard HDMI. Connect your soundbar to the eARC port and set the HDMI signal format to Standard. You won't get eARC audio pass-through but the connection will work for normal use.
