Turns Off By Itself
TCL Smart TV
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A TCL TV that turns off by itself almost always has a sleep timer or auto power-off setting enabled. Check Settings for a sleep timer, auto power off, or HDMI CEC power-off commands from a connected device. Disabling these settings stops the random shutdowns immediately.
Affected Models
- TCL 4-Series
- TCL 5-Series
- TCL 6-Series
- TCL S4
- TCL Q6
- TCL QM8
Common Causes
- The sleep timer is set and turning the TV off at the scheduled time
- Auto Power Off or No Signal Auto Off is enabled — the TV shuts down after detecting no activity
- A connected HDMI device (soundbar, cable box, game console) is sending a CEC power-off command
- The TV is overheating and triggering a thermal protection shutdown
- A firmware bug is causing unintended shutdowns
How to Fix It
-
Disable the sleep timer. On Roku TV: Settings → System → Time → Sleep Timer → Off. On Google TV: Settings → System → Timer → Sleep Timer → Off.
A previously set sleep timer is the single most common cause of random shutdowns. Check this first.
-
Disable Auto Power Off. On Roku TV: Settings → System → Power → Auto Power Off → Off. On Google TV: Settings → Device Preferences → Auto Power Off → Off.
Auto Power Off shuts the TV down after a set period of inactivity — typically 4 hours.
-
Disable HDMI CEC. On Roku TV: Settings → System → Control other devices (CEC). On Google TV: Settings → Display & Sound → HDMI → HDMI CEC. Turn it off.
A soundbar, Blu-ray player, or game console on a CEC-connected HDMI port can send a power-off command to the TV when the device enters standby.
-
Check that the TV has adequate ventilation — at least 10 cm of clearance on all sides, especially the top.
A TCL TV that shuts off after 30–60 minutes of use is often overheating. Moving it out of an enclosed cabinet often solves this.
-
Update the TV firmware. On Roku TV: Settings → System → System Update. On Google TV: Settings → System → About → System Update.
Firmware updates have resolved random shutdown bugs on several TCL model families.
When to Call a Professional
If the TV shuts off randomly after all timer and CEC settings are disabled and the area around the TV is well-ventilated, the TV may have a capacitor or power board fault. This is worth professional diagnosis only on higher-end or newer TCL models.
Frequently Asked Questions
My TCL TV turns off at exactly the same time every day — why?
This is almost certainly a sleep timer set to that exact time. Go to Settings → System → Time → Sleep Timer and check the setting. Disabling it will stop the daily shutdowns.
TCL TV turns off after 4 hours every time — what setting is this?
This is Auto Power Off, which defaults to 4 hours on many TCL models. It is designed to save power when the TV is left on with no one watching. Disable it in Settings → System → Power → Auto Power Off.
The TV only turns off when my soundbar goes into standby — how do I fix that?
Your soundbar is sending a CEC power-off command to the TV over the HDMI connection. Disable CEC on the TV (Settings → System → CEC) or disable the CEC power-off function on the soundbar itself. You can usually keep other CEC features (like volume control) while disabling only the power-off command.
