No Sound / Audio Not Working

Toshiba Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Toshiba TV no sound is most often caused by the TV being muted, the audio output set to a soundbar instead of internal speakers, or a Fire TV software glitch. Check the mute button, check audio output settings, and perform a power reset before assuming a hardware fault.

Affected Models

  • Toshiba Fire TV (C350, C450, M550 series)
  • Toshiba Smart TV (V35 series)
  • Toshiba UHD TV

Common Causes

  • TV muted or volume at zero
  • Audio output directed to HDMI ARC soundbar that is off or disconnected
  • Dolby Atmos or Dolby Digital Plus setting incompatible with the audio setup
  • Fire TV software glitch silencing audio after an update
  • Built-in speaker failure

How to Fix It

  1. Check mute and volume.

Press the Mute button on the Toshiba or Amazon Fire TV remote. Also press Volume Up repeatedly to confirm the volume is not at zero. The Fire TV voice remote has volume and mute buttons on the side — check these are not stuck.

  2. Check audio output settings.

Go to Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio → Advanced Audio on the Toshiba Fire TV. If the audio output is set to Auto or Dolby Atmos and the connected soundbar or AV receiver does not support it, there may be an audio format mismatch. Switch the audio output to Stereo to test — if audio returns, the soundbar needs its settings adjusted for the Dolby format.

  3. Power reset the TV.

Unplug the Toshiba TV from the wall for 60 seconds, then plug back in. Fire TV OS updates can occasionally reset audio settings or cause driver issues — a power reset often restores normal audio. Also go to Settings → My Fire TV → Restart for a software restart if the TV is powered on.

  4. Check HDMI ARC if using a soundbar.

Ensure the soundbar is connected to the HDMI port labeled ARC on the Toshiba TV. On the TV, go to Settings → Display & Sounds → Audio → HDMI ARC and confirm it is enabled. Switch the soundbar off and on to force an ARC reconnection — ARC handshake failures are common after power events.

  5. Test audio output with a specific app.

Open Netflix or Amazon Prime Video on the Toshiba Fire TV and start a known working title. If audio plays in one app but not another, the issue is app-specific — clear the app cache in Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → select the app → Clear Cache. If no audio plays in any app, the audio system needs a factory reset.

When to Call a Professional

If no sound is heard from the built-in speakers or via HDMI ARC even after a factory reset, the audio processing on the main board may have failed. Contact Toshiba support.
