HDMI Not Working

Vizio Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Press the Input button on the remote and select the correct HDMI port. Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends, wait 10 seconds, and reconnect firmly. If one HDMI port shows no signal with any device, that port may be damaged — try a different HDMI port on the TV.

Affected Models

  • Vizio V-Series
  • Vizio M-Series
  • Vizio P-Series
  • Vizio OLED
  • Vizio E-Series

Common Causes

  • Wrong input selected — TV not set to the HDMI port being used
  • Loose or damaged HDMI cable
  • CEC conflict between the TV and connected device
  • 4K device requires HDMI 2.0 port but is connected to an HDMI 1.4 port
  • Failed HDMI port on the TV (physical damage or ESD)

How to Fix It

  1. Select the correct input

Press the Input button on the Vizio remote → select the HDMI number your device is plugged into (HDMI-1, HDMI-2, etc.). Vizio does not auto-switch inputs.

  2. Re-seat the HDMI cable

Unplug the cable from both the TV and the source device and reconnect firmly. An HDMI cable that is even slightly loose will cause no signal.

  3. Try a different HDMI cable

Swap in a known-good cable. For 4K HDR content, use a certified Premium HDMI 2.0 cable. Cheap cables fail internally without any visible damage.

  4. Disable CEC

Menu → Admin & Privacy → CEC → Off. CEC handshake conflicts can prevent a device from being detected on the HDMI port. Turn CEC off, unplug and replug the HDMI cable, then re-enable CEC if needed.

  5. Check which port supports 4K

On Vizio M-Series and P-Series, only specific HDMI ports support 4K/60Hz. Check your TV's manual or the label next to each port. Connect 4K devices to the correct port.

When to Call a Professional

If all HDMI ports fail with multiple tested cables and devices, the HDMI controller chip has failed. This requires mainboard-level repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vizio TV says No Signal on HDMI — what does it mean?

The TV is on the right input but the connected device is not sending video. Check that the device is powered on, not in sleep mode, and that its HDMI output is active.

Vizio TV HDMI ARC not sending audio to soundbar — how to fix?

HDMI ARC requires the correct port (usually HDMI-1 on Vizio TVs) and CEC enabled on both devices. Menu → Audio → Digital Audio Out → set to Dolby Digital or PCM. Also confirm the soundbar is set to its ARC input.

Vizio TV shows HDMI port but no picture from console — why?

The console may be outputting a resolution the TV cannot display. On PS5: hold the power button for 7 seconds to reset video output to 1080p. On Xbox: hold the power button for 10 seconds, then press it once — it boots in safe resolution mode.
