No Picture / Black Screen

Vizio Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Vizio TV with sound but no picture almost always means backlight failure. Shine a torch at the screen — if you see a faint image, the backlight LEDs have failed. Vizio backlight issues are very common on 3–5 year old sets.

Affected Models

  • Vizio M-Series
  • Vizio P-Series
  • Vizio V-Series
  • Vizio OLED
  • Vizio Quantum series

Common Causes

  • Backlight LEDs failed — very common on Vizio LCD models
  • TV input set to a source with no signal
  • TV in sleep or screensaver mode
  • Software crash causing display to go blank
  • Power board failure (TV won't power on at all)
  • HDMI cable or source device issue

How to Fix It

  1. Press the Input button and check the selected source.

Use the remote to cycle through HDMI 1, HDMI 2, TV, etc. The TV may simply be on a source with no signal connected.

  2. Power cycle the TV.

Unplug from the wall — not just standby — for 60 seconds. Press the power button on the TV itself (not remote) while unplugged to discharge capacitors. Plug back in.

  3. Shine a torch at the screen in a dark room.

Hold a bright torch flat against the screen and look for a faint image. If you see one, the backlights have failed but the TV panel itself is fine. Backlight repair is possible but requires a technician.

  4. Try connecting via a different HDMI port.

A faulty HDMI port can cause a black screen even with audio. Try HDMI 2 or HDMI 3 with the same cable.

  5. Perform a full factory reset.

If you can access the menu (check with the torch trick): Menu → System → Reset & Admin → Reset TV to Factory Defaults. If the screen is completely dark, the Vizio reset button is on the side/rear of the TV — hold for 10 seconds.
