Always-On Display Not Working

Apple Smart Watch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Apple Watch Always-On Display stops working when it is turned off in Settings, the watch is in Low Power Mode, or Theatre Mode is active. Go to Settings > Display and Brightness > Always On and toggle it back on.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 5
  • Apple Watch Series 6
  • Apple Watch Series 7
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2

Common Causes

  • Always On Display switched off in Settings
  • Low Power Mode enabled — automatically disables AOD to save battery
  • Theatre Mode active — AOD is suppressed to avoid lighting up in dark environments
  • Cinema Mode or Focus mode suppressing the display
  • Water Lock active after a swim

How to Fix It

  1. Check Settings > Display and Brightness > Always On on the watch.

Scroll down and confirm the Always On toggle is green (enabled). This is the most common reason — it gets switched off when troubleshooting battery issues and never turned back on.

  2. Turn off Low Power Mode if it is active.

Low Power Mode disables Always-On Display automatically to extend battery life. Go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode and toggle it off.

  3. Disable Theatre Mode.

Swipe up on the watch face to open Control Centre. If the Theatre Mode icon (two masks) is highlighted, tap it to turn it off. Theatre Mode keeps the screen dark and suppresses AOD.

  4. Deactivate Water Lock if it was triggered after swimming.

Turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen after a swim. Water Lock disables the touchscreen and suppresses AOD — it remains active until you manually clear it.

  5. Restart the Apple Watch.

Hold the Side Button until the power slider appears, drag to power off, then hold Side Button again to restart. A software glitch occasionally disables AOD even when settings appear correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Apple Watch models support Always-On Display?

Always-On Display is available on Apple Watch Series 5 and later, including Ultra and Ultra 2. Series 4 and older do not support AOD.

Does Always-On Display significantly drain the battery?

Apple Watch AOD is engineered to have minimal impact — Apple claims it uses advanced power management to show a dimmed version of the watch face. In practice, expect roughly 10-20% less battery life compared to AOD off.
