Battery Draining Fast

Apple Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Apple Watch is consuming more power than normal. The most common culprits are the Always-On display, background app refresh, heart rate monitoring frequency, or a buggy app. Small settings changes can often double your battery life.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 7

Common Causes

  • Always-On Display is enabled (uses significant power)
  • Too many apps running background refresh
  • Frequent heart rate monitoring or ECG checks
  • Cellular model constantly searching for signal
  • Old or degraded battery after 2-3 years of use
  • A recently installed app has a power bug

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off Always-On Display: on the watch go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On > Off.

Always-On Display is the single biggest battery drain. Turning it off alone can add 4–6 hours of battery life.

  2. Reduce background app refresh: on iPhone open the Watch app > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off for apps you do not need updated constantly.

Each app with background refresh wakes the watch processor regularly. Limiting this to only essential apps saves significant power.

  3. Turn off Wake on Wrist Raise if you do not use it constantly: Settings > Display & Brightness > Wake on Wrist Raise.

Every time you move your wrist, the display turns on. Disabling this and using tap-to-wake saves battery without much inconvenience.

  4. Check which apps are using the most battery: iPhone Watch app > Battery.

A single misbehaving app can drain the battery in hours. Identify and delete or update any app using an unusual amount of power.

  5. Check battery health: on the watch go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

Apple Watch batteries degrade over time. If capacity is below 80%, a battery replacement will restore full-day battery life.

When to Call a Professional

If your Apple Watch is more than 2 years old and battery life has become very short (under 8 hours), the battery may need replacement. Apple offers a battery replacement service — check apple.com/support for pricing in your country.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is normal battery life for Apple Watch?

Apple rates most Apple Watch models at 18 hours of typical use. Apple Watch Ultra is rated for up to 60 hours in Low Power Mode. If your watch is not reaching 12–14 hours on normal use, something is draining it faster than it should.

Does cellular use more battery than Bluetooth?

Yes — cellular (LTE) uses considerably more power than staying connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth. If you have a cellular Apple Watch, try disabling LTE when your iPhone is nearby: Control Centre > Cellular icon.
