Blood Oxygen Not Working

Apple Smart Watch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Apple Watch Blood Oxygen readings fail when the watch is worn too loosely, the wrist is moving, the skin is cold, or the sensor lens on the back of the watch is dirty. Tighten the band, keep still for the full 15-second reading, and clean the sensor.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 6
  • Apple Watch Series 7
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2

Common Causes

  • Watch worn too loosely — the sensor loses contact with the skin
  • Movement during the measurement — even small wrist motions cause a failed reading
  • Cold skin — low blood flow near the surface makes SpO2 hard to measure
  • Dirt, lotion, or sweat on the back sensor lens
  • Tattoos or dark skin pigmentation on the wrist (can interfere with optical sensors)
  • Blood Oxygen background measurements turned off in settings

How to Fix It

  1. Make sure the watch sits snugly on your wrist — the back must stay in firm contact with skin.

A loose watch lifts away during measurements. Tighten the band so you can slide one finger underneath — not two. Too tight restricts blood flow and also causes errors.

  2. Keep your arm still and flat on a hard surface for the full 15-second reading.

Open the Blood Oxygen app, press Start, rest your arm on a table or your knee, and do not move until the result appears. Even slight tremors break the optical signal.

  3. Clean the back sensor with a soft damp cloth.

Sweat, sunscreen, and hand cream build up on the four green LED clusters and the red/infrared sensors. Polish gently with a lint-free cloth, dry completely, then retry.

  4. Warm up your wrist before measuring in cold conditions.

Cold constricts blood vessels near the skin surface. Go indoors for a few minutes or rub your wrist to improve circulation before taking a reading.

  5. Check that Blood Oxygen is enabled in the Watch app on your iPhone.

On your iPhone go to Watch app > Blood Oxygen > enable Blood Oxygen Measurements. Background readings also require Do Not Disturb and Theatre Mode to be OFF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Apple Watch models support Blood Oxygen?

Blood Oxygen (SpO2) is available on Apple Watch Series 6 and later, plus Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2. Series 5 and older do not have the hardware sensor.

Why does Blood Oxygen say it cannot take a measurement?

This message appears when the sensor cannot get a clean reading — usually because the watch is too loose, the wrist is moving, or the skin is cold. Follow the fit and stillness steps above and try again.

Is Apple Watch SpO2 medically accurate?

Apple Watch Blood Oxygen is designed for general wellness tracking, not medical diagnosis. For clinical measurements, use a certified pulse oximeter clipped to a fingertip.
