Call Audio Not Working
Apple Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Apple Watch speaker is not playing call audio, or the microphone is not picking up your voice. This is usually caused by volume being muted, a software glitch routing audio back to the iPhone, or a blocked speaker grille. Most cases are fixed with a quick settings adjustment.
Affected Models
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 7
Common Causes
- Volume turned down to zero on the Apple Watch
- Audio routing defaulted to iPhone instead of Apple Watch
- Speaker grille blocked by lint, debris, or residue
- Microphone opening on the side blocked
- Software glitch during an active call
- Bluetooth headphones connected and capturing the audio
How to Fix It
-
During a call, turn the Digital Crown clockwise to increase the volume.
Apple Watch call volume is separate from notification volume. The Digital Crown controls it directly during an active call.
-
During a call, tap the audio icon and select 'Apple Watch' if it is set to iPhone or headphones.
When a call comes in, iOS decides where to route audio. If it defaults to iPhone, you need to manually switch audio output to Apple Watch.
-
Clean the speaker grille (the row of small holes on the side of the watch) with a soft dry toothbrush.
Lint and debris pack into the speaker holes over time and muffle audio. Gentle brushing without liquids clears the blockage.
-
Disconnect any paired Bluetooth headphones or earbuds.
If AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones are connected, all call audio routes to them automatically — even if they are in the case nearby.
-
Force restart the Apple Watch and try a test call.
A software glitch can route audio incorrectly. A force restart (Digital Crown + side button for 10 seconds) clears this.
When to Call a Professional
If the speaker produces distorted or very faint audio even at full volume with a clean grille, the speaker hardware may be damaged. Water damage is a common cause — even though Apple Watch is water-resistant, it is not waterproof in all conditions. Contact Apple Support for a speaker repair assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can people not hear me when I call from my Apple Watch?
The most common reason is that the microphone opening (a small hole on the side of the watch case) is blocked by debris or a finger. Speak towards the side of the watch, not the screen, and ensure nothing is covering the microphone hole.
Can I make calls on Apple Watch without my iPhone nearby?
Yes — if you have a cellular Apple Watch (with an LTE plan), you can make and receive calls even when your iPhone is not with you. Without cellular, the watch can only make calls when your iPhone is nearby and connected via Bluetooth.
