Heart Rate Not Working
Apple Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Apple Watch optical heart rate sensor on the back of the watch cannot get a clean reading from your wrist. The most common reasons are a loose fit, dirty sensor, or a skin tone and wrist placement combination that the sensor struggles with. This is almost always fixable without any repairs.
Affected Models
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 7
Common Causes
- Watch band is too loose — sensor not making firm contact
- Sensor on the back of the watch is dirty or smudged
- Watch is worn too close to the wrist bone
- Heart rate permissions disabled for the Health app
- Tattoos on the wrist can interfere with optical sensors
- Excessive movement during measurement confuses the sensor
How to Fix It
-
Wear the watch snugly — it should sit about 1–2 finger widths above the wrist bone.
The sensor needs firm skin contact to work. If the watch slides around or you can spin it freely, tighten the band.
-
Clean the back of the Apple Watch with a slightly damp lint-free cloth.
Sweat, sunscreen, and skin oils can coat the sensor window and block the green LED light it uses to detect blood flow.
-
Stay still for 15–30 seconds while taking a manual reading.
Wrist movement causes false readings and gaps. Sit down, rest your arm on a surface, and let the watch measure for at least 15 seconds.
-
Check Health permissions: iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Apple Watch > enable Heart Rate.
If heart rate data sharing was accidentally blocked, the watch stops storing and displaying readings.
-
Restart the Apple Watch: hold the side button > Power Off > turn back on.
A sensor that has stopped responding to software commands often recovers after a restart.
When to Call a Professional
If the heart rate sensor reads zero or dashes every time, even with the watch sitting still flat against clean skin, there may be a hardware fault. Contact Apple Support — sensor failures within the warranty period are covered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Apple Watch show dashes instead of my heart rate?
Dashes mean the sensor could not get a confident reading. This is almost always a fit issue — the watch is too loose, or you moved during the reading. Tighten the band, stay still, and try again.
Can tattoos stop Apple Watch from reading heart rate?
Yes — dark or dense tattoos on the wrist can block or scatter the green LED light the sensor uses. If you have a wrist tattoo where the watch sits, you may consistently get poor readings. Trying the watch on the other wrist, or using an ECG chest strap accessory, may give better results.
