Not Charging

Apple Smartwatch

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Apple Watch is not receiving power from the charger. This is usually caused by a dirty charging pad, a loose connection, a faulty cable, or a power adapter that cannot deliver enough current. This is almost always a hardware or accessories issue, not a fault with the watch itself.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 7

Common Causes

  • Charging pad contacts are dirty or sweaty
  • Charging cable is not properly aligned (magnetic connection lost)
  • Third-party charger delivering insufficient power
  • Power adapter or USB port is faulty
  • Debris or moisture in the charging area
  • Severely depleted battery (may take several minutes before showing any charge icon)

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the back of the Apple Watch and the charging puck with a dry cloth.

Sweat and skin oils break the electrical connection between the magnetic charger and the watch. Even a thin layer of grime can stop charging.

  2. Re-seat the charger — remove it and place it back firmly onto the back of the watch.

The MagSafe charger attaches magnetically. If it is slightly off-centre, it may not charge. You should see the charging icon appear within a few seconds.

  3. Try a different USB power adapter or plug into a different wall socket.

Some USB chargers cannot deliver the 5W minimum needed for Apple Watch. Use Apple's own 5W adapter or any USB-C power adapter rated at 5W or more.

  4. If the battery is completely flat, leave the watch on the charger for at least 10 minutes before expecting a response.

A fully dead battery may show nothing for the first several minutes. This is normal — the watch is building up enough charge to power the display.

  5. Test with an official Apple Watch charger if you have been using a third-party cable.

Many cheap third-party chargers underperform or stop working. Apple recommends using Apple-certified (MFi) accessories.

When to Call a Professional

If the watch will not charge with a known-good Apple charger and power adapter, and the back contacts look clean and undamaged, the charging hardware inside the watch may have failed. Visit an Apple Store or authorised service centre — this is covered under warranty if the damage is not physical.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Apple Watch take to charge from empty?

From completely dead to 100% takes about 1.5 hours for most Apple Watch models. Apple Watch Ultra takes around 60 minutes to reach 80% and about 2.5 hours for a full charge. If it is taking much longer than this, the charger may not be delivering full power.

Can I charge Apple Watch with any wireless charger?

No — Apple Watch uses a proprietary MagSafe charging system and will not charge on standard Qi wireless chargers (like those used for phones). You must use an Apple Watch magnetic charger or a certified third-party equivalent.
