Not Syncing
Apple Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Your Apple Watch is not sharing data with your iPhone. This usually means Bluetooth has dropped, the Watch app needs a restart, or a software update is blocking the sync. Most sync problems are solved with a restart of both devices.
Affected Models
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 7
Common Causes
- Bluetooth connection dropped between watch and iPhone
- iPhone or Apple Watch needs a software update
- The Watch app on iPhone crashed or is unresponsive
- Low storage on iPhone preventing data from syncing
- Health app permissions revoked for Apple Watch
How to Fix It
-
Check that your iPhone and Apple Watch are within Bluetooth range (about 10 metres / 30 feet).
Apple Watch syncs over Bluetooth. If you are too far from your iPhone, sync will pause and resume when you are close again.
-
Toggle Bluetooth off and on: go to iPhone Settings > Bluetooth.
This forces a fresh Bluetooth handshake between the devices and often resolves stuck syncs immediately.
-
Restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch.
On Apple Watch: press and hold the side button, then drag the Power Off slider. On iPhone: use the standard restart for your model.
-
Check iPhone storage — go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
If your iPhone has less than 1 GB free, health and fitness data from Apple Watch may fail to sync. Delete unused apps or photos to free space.
-
Open the Watch app on iPhone, go to Privacy, and verify the Health and Fitness permissions are all enabled.
If these permissions were accidentally revoked, Apple Watch will stop syncing health data.
-
Update both devices to the latest iOS and watchOS versions.
Apple often fixes sync bugs in software updates. Install any pending updates on both your iPhone and Apple Watch.
When to Call a Professional
If syncing has been broken for several days and none of the fixes work, contact Apple Support. There may be an account-level issue with iCloud or Health data that needs to be resolved on the server side.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Apple Watch take to sync with iPhone?
Most syncing is nearly instant when both devices are close together. Initial setup sync (when you first pair) can take 30–60 minutes as all your health history transfers. If normal syncing takes more than a few minutes, something is likely wrong.
Does Apple Watch sync over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?
Apple Watch primarily syncs with iPhone over Bluetooth. Some tasks like app downloads and iCloud backups use Wi-Fi directly. For everyday health and notification sync, Bluetooth must be active on your iPhone.
