Notifications Not Showing

Apple Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Notifications from your iPhone are not appearing on your Apple Watch. This is most commonly caused by Do Not Disturb being active, incorrect notification settings in the Watch app, or the watch being disconnected from your iPhone. This is always a settings issue and can be fixed without any repairs.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 7

Common Causes

  • Do Not Disturb or Sleep Focus mode is active on iPhone or Apple Watch
  • Notifications for specific apps are disabled in the Watch app
  • iPhone is not locked when the notification arrives (iPhone gets the notification instead)
  • Apple Watch is not connected to iPhone
  • Mirror iPhone setting is preventing Watch-specific notification configuration

How to Fix It

  1. Check that Do Not Disturb and all Focus modes are turned off on both iPhone and Apple Watch.

Focus modes (Sleep, Work, Personal) can silently block all notifications. Swipe up on Apple Watch to check — if the moon icon is visible, Do Not Disturb is on.

  2. On iPhone, open the Watch app > Notifications and check that the apps you want are enabled for Apple Watch.

Each app's notification delivery to Apple Watch is controlled individually. Enable the specific apps whose notifications are missing.

  3. Understand iPhone detection: your iPhone only passes notifications to Apple Watch when your iPhone screen is locked.

This is by design — Apple Watch receives notifications only when you are not actively using your iPhone. If your iPhone is unlocked in your hand, it gets the notification instead.

  4. Check that Apple Watch is connected: swipe up on the watch face and look for the green iPhone icon.

If the watch shows a red or missing connection icon, Bluetooth has dropped. Toggle Bluetooth off and on in iPhone Settings to reconnect.

  5. Restart both devices and test with a known notification (ask someone to text you).

A fresh restart clears connection caches and resets the notification pipeline between iPhone and Apple Watch.

When to Call a Professional

Notification delivery is entirely software-controlled — there is no hardware component involved. If notifications still do not work after following all steps, contact Apple Support for account-level assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do notifications go to my iPhone but not my Apple Watch?

Apple Watch only receives notifications when your iPhone screen is locked. If you are holding your iPhone and it is unlocked, the iPhone gets the notification — not the watch. Put your iPhone face-down or lock it, then test again.

Why do only some apps send notifications to Apple Watch?

Not all apps support Apple Watch notifications. For apps that do, each one must be individually enabled in the Watch app on your iPhone under Notifications. Some apps also have their own in-app settings for watch notifications that must be enabled separately.
