Red Lightning Bolt

Apple Smartwatch

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

The red lightning bolt means your Apple Watch battery is critically low and the watch has entered Power Reserve mode. It needs to be placed on its charger immediately. This is a warning, not an error — the watch is not broken.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 7

Common Causes

  • Battery has dropped to critically low levels (usually under 10%)
  • Watch has automatically entered Power Reserve to preserve the last remaining battery
  • Normal behaviour after extended use without charging

How to Fix It

  1. Place the Apple Watch on its magnetic charger immediately.

The red lightning bolt only disappears once the watch has enough charge to resume normal operation. Give it at least 5–10 minutes on the charger.

  2. Press the Digital Crown once after placing it on the charger.

This wakes the display so you can see the charging icon confirming the charger is working.

  3. Wait until you see the green charging icon (lightning bolt inside a circle) before removing from the charger.

The green icon confirms the watch is actively receiving power. Do not remove it until you have seen this icon.

  4. Let the watch charge to at least 20% before putting it back on your wrist for normal use.

Repeatedly running Apple Watch down to the red lightning bolt accelerates battery degradation. Try to charge it overnight so it starts the day full.

When to Call a Professional

If you regularly see the red lightning bolt after only a few hours of use, the battery may be degraded and no longer holding a full charge. Apple Watch batteries are consumable — after 2-3 years of daily charging cycles, capacity drops. Apple offers a battery replacement service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use my Apple Watch when it shows the red lightning bolt?

Only very limited use is possible — Power Reserve mode shows only the time by pressing the Digital Crown. All other features (notifications, heart rate, apps) are suspended until the battery is charged. This is intentional — Apple Watch uses Power Reserve to ensure you can still see the time even with almost no battery left.

How do I turn off Power Reserve mode?

Power Reserve turns off automatically once the watch is charged and the battery is above the critical threshold. You can also force-exit it by pressing and holding the side button for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears — but only do this if the watch is on the charger, otherwise it will simply run out of power.
