Side Button Not Working
Apple Smartwatch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Digital Crown or side button on your Apple Watch is not responding to presses or turns. This is commonly caused by debris stuck in the gap around the Digital Crown, a software freeze, or physical damage. Cleaning the crown area fixes the majority of mechanical response issues.
Affected Models
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 7
Common Causes
- Debris, dirt, or dried sweat jammed in the Digital Crown gap
- Software freeze causing buttons to become unresponsive
- Water or moisture inside the button mechanism
- Physical impact damage to the button
- Button accessibility settings remapping button functions
How to Fix It
-
Clean around the Digital Crown: run a small stream of lukewarm fresh water over it and rotate the crown back and forth.
Apple specifically recommends this for cleaning the Digital Crown on water-resistant models. The water dislodges dried salt, dirt, and sunscreen that cause sticking.
-
Dry the watch thoroughly after cleaning — tap the crown side against your palm to remove any water.
Let the speaker eject water naturally by rotating the Digital Crown after getting it wet. Avoid using compressed air which can damage seals.
-
If buttons are unresponsive (not mechanical), force restart: hold Digital Crown + side button together for 10 seconds.
If both buttons are unresponsive due to a software freeze, you may need to press very firmly for the full 10 seconds.
-
Check accessibility settings: on iPhone Watch app > Accessibility > ensure no button remapping or AssistiveTouch settings are interfering.
Some accessibility features change how buttons behave. If AssistiveTouch is on, the on-screen controls replace physical button functions.
When to Call a Professional
If the button physically feels stuck, grinds, or does not spring back after pressing, there is likely a mechanical fault. Apple can replace the Digital Crown assembly. Do not attempt to disassemble Apple Watch yourself — the internal components are extremely delicate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Digital Crown feel gritty or stiff?
Grit and dried salt from sweat accumulate in the small gap around the Digital Crown. Apple recommends rinsing it under lukewarm running water while rotating the crown. This dissolves salt deposits and removes debris without damaging the water-resistant seals.
What does the side button do on Apple Watch?
The side button (the flat rectangular button below the Digital Crown) has several functions depending on how you press it. A single press opens the Dock (recent apps). A double press launches Apple Pay. Pressing and holding initiates Emergency SOS. On Apple Watch Ultra, there is also a separate Action Button on the other side.
