Siri Not Working
Apple Smartwatch
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Siri is not responding to voice commands or button presses on your Apple Watch. This is usually caused by Siri being disabled in settings, the microphone being blocked, or the watch needing a restart. It rarely indicates a serious problem.
Affected Models
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 7
Common Causes
- Siri is turned off in Apple Watch settings
- Hey Siri feature is disabled
- Microphone blocked by debris
- Apple Watch not connected to iPhone or cellular (Siri needs internet)
- Software glitch preventing Siri from launching
- Language or region settings conflict
How to Fix It
-
Enable Siri on Apple Watch: open the Watch app on iPhone > Siri > and turn on 'Listen for Hey Siri' and 'Press Digital Crown for Siri'.
Siri can be accidentally toggled off. Enabling both triggers gives you two ways to activate it.
-
Ensure the Apple Watch is connected to iPhone or has a cellular signal.
Siri requires an internet connection to process requests. If the watch is disconnected and has no cellular plan, Siri will not respond.
-
Raise your wrist and say 'Hey Siri' clearly, or press and hold the Digital Crown for 2 seconds.
Make sure you are raising your wrist and speaking to the watch within 2 seconds of raising it. Delayed speech after wrist raise can miss the trigger window.
-
Check the microphone is not blocked — the small hole on the side of the watch case.
If the microphone is covered by a case, band, or debris, Siri cannot hear you. Check the opening is clean and unobstructed.
-
Restart the Apple Watch and test again.
A software crash can prevent Siri from launching. Force restart by holding Digital Crown + side button for 10 seconds.
When to Call a Professional
If Siri does not work even after a full reset and the microphone appears unblocked, there may be a microphone hardware issue. Apple can test the microphone and replace it if necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Siri say 'Try again later' on my Apple Watch?
This message means Siri processed your request but Apple's servers are temporarily unavailable. Check that your watch is connected to the internet and try again in a few minutes. If it happens constantly, a restart usually resolves the connection issue.
Does Siri work on Apple Watch without iPhone?
Siri works on cellular Apple Watch models independently. On GPS-only models without cellular, Siri needs the iPhone to be nearby and connected via Bluetooth. Either way, an internet connection (via iPhone or cellular) is required for Siri to process your request.
