Stuck on Apple Logo

Apple Smartwatch

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Apple Watch is frozen during the startup process and cannot complete booting. This is often caused by a failed software update, a software crash, or very low battery. A force restart fixes most cases without losing any data.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 7

Common Causes

  • A watchOS software update was interrupted or failed
  • The battery died mid-operation, corrupting startup files
  • A third-party app caused a crash during boot
  • Corrupt system software requiring a restore
  • Hardware failure (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Force restart the Apple Watch: press and hold both the Digital Crown and the side button simultaneously for 10 seconds.

Release both buttons when the Apple logo disappears and reappears. This is safe and does not erase your data.

  2. Place the Apple Watch on its charger while force restarting.

If the battery was critically low when it froze, charging while restarting gives it the power it needs to complete the boot process.

  3. If it boots but freezes again — keep it charging for at least 30 minutes before restarting.

Very low battery can cause repeated boot failures. A longer charge session ensures there is enough power to complete startup.

  4. If force restart does not help, use the iPhone Watch app to restore the watch: go to My Watch > General > Reset > Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.

This erases the watch and reinstalls a clean version of watchOS. Your Health data stored in iCloud will be restored when you pair again.

  5. For Series 4 and later, you can also update or restore via the Watch app without erasing — check the Watch app for a 'Restore' option if the watch connects to iPhone.

Apple introduced over-the-air restore in newer models. This reinstalls watchOS while keeping your Apple ID active.

When to Call a Professional

If a force restart and restore via iPhone do not fix the issue, the watch may have a hardware fault. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store — Apple Watch stuck in a permanent boot loop is sometimes covered under warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a force restart delete my Apple Watch data?

No — a force restart is like a hard reboot on a computer. It does not erase your apps, health data, or settings. Only a full reset (Erase All Content) will delete your data.

How long should I wait before force restarting?

Give it 5–10 minutes first — sometimes the Apple logo appears for a while during a legitimate update installation. If it has been on the Apple logo for more than 10 minutes with no progress, proceed with a force restart.
