Touchscreen Not Responding

Apple Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The Apple Watch display is not registering your touch inputs. This is usually a temporary software freeze and a force restart resolves it in seconds. Wet hands or a wet screen can also block touch responses.

Affected Models

  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)
  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch Series 7

Common Causes

  • Water Lock mode is active (intentionally disables touch while swimming)
  • Wet hands or a wet screen blocking the capacitive sensor
  • A crashed app has frozen the entire interface
  • Low memory causing the system to become unresponsive
  • Screen protector interfering with touch sensitivity
  • Physical damage to the display (cracked screen)

How to Fix It

  1. Check if Water Lock is active — look for a padlock icon on the screen. Rotate the Digital Crown to unlock.

Apple Watch automatically disables the touchscreen during swimming to prevent accidental inputs. Rotating the Digital Crown exits Water Lock mode.

  2. Dry your hands and the watch screen thoroughly before touching it.

Apple Watch uses capacitive touch — the same technology as iPhones. Water disrupts the electrical signal and makes touches unregisterable.

  3. Force restart: press and hold both the Digital Crown and the side button simultaneously for 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

This is the most effective fix for a frozen touchscreen. It is safe and does not erase any data.

  4. Remove any screen protector and test without it.

Thick or poorly fitted screen protectors reduce touch sensitivity. Apple Watch screens are scratch-resistant and generally do not need protectors.

  5. Update watchOS to the latest version via the iPhone Watch app.

Touch responsiveness bugs in specific watchOS versions are fixed in software updates.

When to Call a Professional

If the touchscreen is physically cracked or the touch is unresponsive only in specific areas of the screen, the display needs professional repair. Apple offers screen replacement — check apple.com for pricing and whether AppleCare+ covers your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my Apple Watch respond to my touch while swimming?

This is intentional — Apple Watch has a Water Lock mode that disables the touchscreen during water activities to prevent accidental taps. To exit Water Lock after swimming, rotate the Digital Crown. The watch will eject any water from the speaker at the same time.

Can a cracked Apple Watch screen still work?

Sometimes — hairline cracks may not affect touch function at all. However, deeper cracks that damage the digitizer layer underneath will cause dead spots where touch does not register. Water can also get in through cracks and cause additional damage, so it is best to get a cracked screen repaired promptly.
