Exercise Not Tracking
Fitbit Smart Watch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Fitbit exercise tracking fails when SmartTrack is disabled, the device is not synced, or the workout type does not meet the minimum motion threshold. Check that SmartTrack is on in the Fitbit app, then sync the device.
Affected Models
- Fitbit Sense 2
- Fitbit Versa 4
- Fitbit Charge 6
- Fitbit Inspire 3
- Fitbit Luxe
- Fitbit Versa 3
Common Causes
- SmartTrack auto-exercise detection turned off in app settings
- Workout did not meet SmartTrack minimum threshold (10+ continuous minutes of motion)
- Device not synced after exercise — data exists on device but not in the app
- Fitbit worn too loosely, missing wrist movement data
- Heart rate tracking disabled, affecting calorie and active zone calculations
- Firmware bug — fixed by updating
How to Fix It
-
Check that SmartTrack is enabled in the Fitbit app.
Open the Fitbit app > tap your profile > your device > Exercise Detection (SmartTrack) and make sure it is turned on for the exercise types you do.
-
Sync the Fitbit device with the app.
Exercise data is stored on the device and transferred during sync. Open the Fitbit app and pull down to sync, or tap the sync icon. If a workout happened recently but is not showing, give the sync a minute to process.
-
Log the exercise manually in the Fitbit app if auto-detection missed it.
Tap the + button in the Fitbit app > Log > Exercise and enter the activity, start time, and duration. This does not recover GPS or heart rate data but does count the session toward your goals.
-
For GPS activities, start the workout manually from the Exercise tile on your Fitbit.
SmartTrack does not record GPS routes — you must manually start a workout on the device to get GPS tracking. Swipe to the Exercise tile, tap it, select your exercise, and press the play button.
-
Ensure the Fitbit is worn snugly on your wrist during exercise.
A loose Fitbit detects little wrist movement and may not identify an exercise session. Wear it about two finger-widths above the wrist bone and tighten the band slightly during workouts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does SmartTrack miss cycling or rowing workouts?
SmartTrack relies on wrist motion patterns. Cycling and rowing produce limited wrist movement, making them harder to auto-detect. For these activities, always start the exercise manually on the device.
Can I recover a missed workout recorded on the device?
Yes — if you sync within 7 days, the data saved on the device will transfer to the app. After 7 days the oldest data may be overwritten.
