GPS Not Working

Fitbit Fitness Tracker / Smartwatch

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Fitbit cannot acquire a GPS signal when starting a workout, or GPS tracking is inaccurate during your run or walk. Fitbit GPS needs a clear outdoor location and 30–60 seconds to lock onto satellites. Many Fitbit models use your phone's GPS rather than built-in GPS — check which type your model has.

Affected Models

  • Fitbit Charge 6
  • Fitbit Versa 4
  • Fitbit Sense 2
  • Fitbit Inspire 3

Common Causes

  • Standing indoors or near buildings when trying to get GPS lock
  • Not waiting long enough for GPS to acquire signal before starting workout
  • Phone GPS not enabled (for models using Connected GPS)
  • Location permission not granted to Fitbit app
  • GPS software needs updating via firmware update

How to Fix It

  1. Step outside to a clear, open area before starting your workout — wait for the GPS icon to turn solid (not flashing) before you start.

Fitbit shows a flashing GPS icon while searching and a solid icon when locked. Starting a workout before lock-on gives inaccurate route data.

  2. Check if your Fitbit uses built-in GPS or Connected GPS (phone GPS): in the Fitbit app > your device > GPS type.

Models without built-in GPS use your phone's GPS. If your phone is not with you or location is off, GPS will not work.

  3. Enable location on your phone and grant Fitbit 'Allow all the time' location permission.

For Connected GPS, the Fitbit app needs location permission set to 'Allow all the time' — not just 'While using app'. Go to phone Settings > Apps > Fitbit > Permissions > Location.

  4. Update Fitbit firmware: Fitbit app > your device > the update banner if available.

GPS performance improvements are included in firmware updates. Keeping your Fitbit updated ensures best GPS accuracy.

  5. After a long period without use, wait up to 3 minutes outdoors for GPS to cold-start.

A cold start (first GPS use in a long time) takes longer as the device needs to download satellite almanac data. This is normal.

When to Call a Professional

If GPS consistently fails to lock after 3 minutes outdoors with a clear sky view, and a firmware update has been applied, contact Fitbit Support. Hardware GPS failures are uncommon but do occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Fitbit models have built-in GPS?

Fitbit Charge 6, Versa 4, and Sense 2 have built-in GPS and can track routes without a phone. Fitbit Inspire 3 and Fitbit Luxe use Connected GPS and require your phone nearby for route tracking. Check the Fitbit website to confirm which GPS type your specific model has.

Why is my Fitbit GPS route track jagged or inaccurate?

GPS accuracy in cities is affected by tall buildings that reflect and block satellite signals (called 'urban canyon' effect). In open areas like parks and fields, GPS accuracy is typically within 5–10 metres. In dense city centres or forested areas, inaccuracy of 20–50 metres is normal and is not a fault with your Fitbit.
