Not Charging

Fitbit Fitness Tracker / Smartwatch

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Fitbit is on the charger but the battery level is not increasing. The most common cause is a dirty charging connector — Fitbits use a proprietary magnetic or clip-on charger that is sensitive to skin oils and debris. Cleaning both connectors fixes the majority of Fitbit charging failures.

Affected Models

  • Fitbit Charge 6
  • Fitbit Versa 4
  • Fitbit Sense 2
  • Fitbit Inspire 3
  • Fitbit Luxe

Common Causes

  • Charging pins on the Fitbit or charger are dirty or corroded
  • Charger is not properly aligned with the charging points
  • USB adapter is not delivering enough power
  • Charging cable is damaged or broken
  • Fitbit battery has fully discharged (may take minutes to show any response)

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the charging pins on the Fitbit and the charger with a dry cotton swab or cloth.

Skin oils, sweat, and dust coat the metal charging contacts and break the electrical connection. Both the device pins and the charger pins must be clean.

  2. Re-seat the charger — remove and reattach it, ensuring the pins or clips align and click into place.

Fitbit chargers use either magnetic pins or a clip mechanism. If it is not properly attached, no power is transferred.

  3. Try a different USB power adapter and a different USB port (try a wall adapter, not a computer USB port).

Computer USB ports can deliver insufficient power for Fitbit charging. A standard 5W wall adapter is more reliable.

  4. If the battery is completely flat, wait 10–15 minutes on the charger before expecting any screen response.

A deeply discharged Fitbit may appear completely dead for the first several minutes of charging. Do not remove the charger during this time.

When to Call a Professional

If the Fitbit does not charge with a confirmed clean cable and a working USB adapter, the charging port or battery inside the device may have failed. Fitbit offers a warranty replacement policy — contact Fitbit Support at fitbit.com/support if the device is within warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fully charge a Fitbit?

Most Fitbit devices charge from 0 to 100% in 1–2 hours. Fitbit Versa 4 and Sense 2 charge faster with their magnetic chargers. If your Fitbit takes more than 3 hours for a full charge, the charger or USB adapter may not be delivering full power.

Why is my Fitbit charger getting warm but the device isn't charging?

A warm charger with no charging means there is a bad connection between the charger and the device — power is being dissipated as heat rather than transferred. Check that the pins are clean and properly aligned. If the charger gets very hot, stop using it — it may be faulty and could be a safety issue.
